A key component to each of his wife's 638 wins with the Shawnee State women's basketball program, Gregg Smith's assistant coaching career spanned over two decades with his wife, one that saw the Shawnee State women's basketball program go 638-160 overall with a .799 winning percentage as a result over a quarter-century stretch.
The program accomplished the following during that time:
- 1999 NAIA National Championship
- 23 20-win seasons
- 20 NAIA National Tournament appearances in a 22-season stretch, and 22 overall.
- 15 seasons with 25 wins or more (including streaks of 9 and 5 consecutive)
- 6 appearances in the NAIA National Quarterfinals or deeper
