Box Score UPLAND, Ind. -- Shawnee State (33-18, 16-11) defeated fourth-seeded Mount Mercy 12-1 in Monday's NAIA National Tournament opener, advancing to the second round of the winner's bracket against No. 1 Taylor.
The win for the Shawnee State is its first in the NAIA National Tournament since its 6-5 opening-round win over Indiana Tech in 2011.
Mount Mercy scored a run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
Jace Parnin drove in
Jack Amis, who tripled, on a double to left field in the second, tying the game at 1-1.
Later in the inning,
Nolan Austin slugged a two-run homer to give the Bears a 3-1 lead.
Jace Parnin recorded his second RBI double of the day in the third to extend Shawnee State's lead to 4-1.
The Bears scored twice in the fifth as
Larry Drake was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and
Jack Amis scored on a 6-4-3 double play.
Shawnee State scored six runs in the seventh, highlighted by
Byson Arthur scoring on an error,
Jace Parnin hitting a two-run homer and
Zach Gaspar recording a three-RBI double to left center.
Ricardo Medrano held the Mustangs scoreless in the bottom of the inning, ending the game after seven innings via the 10-run rule.
Medrano earned the win, allowing one run on six hits over seven innings while striking out two.
The senior is 9-0 on the season.
Jace Parnin went 4-for-4 with a home run, two doubles and four RBI, while
Jack Amis finished 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI.
Zach Gaspar, in his lone plate appearance, recorded a three-RBI double to left center.
Nolan Austin went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer in the second.
Wyatt Haupt finished 1-for-2 and
Diego Mendoza went 1-for-4.
Larry Drake went 0-for-1 but recorded an RBI.
