Ricardo Medrano's seven shutout innings lifted Shawnee State (30-16, 16-11) to a 3-0 win over Midway in the first round of the River States Conference tournament.
The Bears will now face Oakland City at VA Memorial Stadium on Friday at 7 p.m.
Newly-named River States Conference Player of the Year,
Diego Mendoza, got things started for Shawnee State with an RBI double in the top of the first that put the Bears ahead 1-0.
Shawnee State extended its lead to 3-0 in the second as
Eli Jones grounded a ball past Midway's shortstop into left field, scoring
Jace Parnin and
Larry Drake.
Ricardo Medrano dominated on the mound, allowing no runs on four hits over seven innings while striking out five.
Evan Hood relieved Medrano in the eighth, and proceeded to toss a one-hit two inning save to complete the Bears' 3-0 shutout win over Midway.
Medrano pushed his record to 8-0 on the season, while
Evan Hood earned his second save.
Jace Parnin went 3-for-4 with a double, while
Diego Mendoza went 1-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
Eli Jones and
Byson Arthur both batted 1-for-4, while
Larry Drake finished 1-for-2 with a double.
The shutout was Shawnee State's second of the season, as its first came
Feb. 28 in a 12-0 win over Rio Grande.
The win for Shawnee State also came against Midway's Tyler Pyles, who was named River States Conference Pitcher of the Year on Thursday. It was Pyles' first loss of the season.
