Box Score 3 MIDWAY, Ky. -- Shawnee State (21-12, 11-7) suffered its first three-game series sweep of the season over the weekend, falling 10-7 on Friday and 5-2 and 7-4 in Saturday's doubleheader.
The Bears currently sit in fifth place in the River States Conference regular-season standings.
GAME 1
Shawnee State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in Friday's series opener, highlighted by an RBI groundout by
Owen Elsey in the first inning and a run driven in by
Nolan Austin on a fielder's choice in the second.
Midway cut the Bears' lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the second, before
Mason Reid slugged a two-run homer in the fifth to push Shawnee State's lead to 4-1.
The Eagles scored two runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the seventh to lead Shawnee State 8-4.
Jack Amis and
Diego Mendoza hit back-to-back home runs in the eight, Amis' a two-run blast, to cut Midway's lead to 8-7.
The Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the inning and held Shawnee State scoreless in the top of the ninth to secure the 10-7 win.
Wyatt Haupt took the loss, allowing three runs on two hits and two walks over one inning while striking out two.
Jack Amis and
Eli Jones each had three hits, with Amis hitting a double and a home run and driving in two runs.
Diego Mendoza went 2-for-6 with a solo home run, while
Byson Arthur and
Larry Drake each finished 2-for-5.
Mason Reid batted 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, and
Jace Parnin went 1-for-5.
Owen Elsey finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.
GAME 2
Midway opened the scoring in the first inning as Taylor Voorhees blasted a three-run homer to put the Eagles ahead 3-0.
Byson Arthur recorded an RBI fielder's choice in the third, cutting the Eagles' lead to 3-1.
Midway extended its lead to 4-1 in the fifth, before
Eli Jones drew an RBI walk in the eighth to bring the Bears' deficit to 4-2.
The Eagles added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning to push their lead to 5-2.
The Bears were held scoreless in the ninth as Midway secured the series with the 5-2 win.
Kyle Mokas took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out two over three innings.
Jack Amis and
Nolan Austin each went 1-for-4 with Amis legging out a double.
Zach Gaspar and
Eli Jones each batted 1-for-3. Gaspar drove in a run in the eighth.
Byson Arthur finished 0-for-4 but recorded an RBI.
GAME 3
Midway scored six runs in the first inning of Game 3, including a grand slam by Max Jewusiak.
Eli Jones hit an RBI single in the second inning, however, Midway's Colt Whaley responded with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning to give Midway a 7-1 advantage.
Owen Elsey hit a two-RBI single in the fourth and
Larry Drake slugged a solo homer in the fifth, cutting Midway's lead to 7-4 after five.
The Bears didn't score in the sixth or seventh innings as Midway secured the series sweep over the Shawnee State.
Carson Wireman was credited with the loss, allowing six runs on three hits, three walks and two hit batters over 2/3 of an inning.
Larry Drake went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, and
Eli Jones finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Zach Gaspar went 1-for-3 with a double and
Byson Arthur finished 1-for-4.
Owen Elsey was 1-for-1 with two RBI.
