Shawnee State Drops Two in Three-Game Series with Brescia

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- Shawnee State (29-16, 16-11) wrapped up its regular-season schedule with a three-game series against Brescia, losing two games to the Bearcats.

The Bears are locked into the No. 4 seed for the River States Conference tournament at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, which begins Thursday, April 30.

GAME 1

Shawnee State opened the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the first inning as Diego Mendoza and Larry Drake hit RBI singles, and Jack Amis hit a two-run homer.

Brescia scored runs in the third and fifth innings to cut the Bears' lead to 4-2 after five.

The Bearcats took their first lead of the game in the sixth inning as Chase Christie hit a three-run homer to put Brescia ahead 5-4.

Diego Mendoza responded with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the inning to give the Bears a 6-5 advantage.

Brescia tied the game in the seventh, before taking an 8-6 lead in the eighth.

The Bears did not see a batter reach base in the eighth or ninth innings, as Brescia held on for the series-opening win.

Jace Parnin took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk over 1 2/3 innings while striking out two.

Diego Mendoza went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI, while Larry Drake finished 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Eli Jones batted 2-for-4 with a double, and Jack Amis finished 1-for-5 with a two-run homer.

Zach Gaspar went 1-for-4 and Byson Arthur batted 1-for-3.

GAME 2

Brescia jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning of Game 2 as Chase Christie laced a two-RBI double to right field.

The Bearcats extended their lead with two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, blanking Shawnee State 6-0.

The Bears got onto the board in the bottom half of the fifth as Nolan Austin hit an RBI double.

Zach Gaspar hit a two-run homer in the sixth, and Eli Jones recorded an RBI single in the seventh as Shawnee State cut its deficit to 6-4.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, the last inning of the game, Jack Amis hit a sacrifice fly to right field to make it 6-5. In the same sequence, Brady Sauer was called out while attempting to advance to second base for a game-ending double play.

Owen Elsey took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits over five innings while striking out four.

Nolan Austin was the only Bear to record multiple hits, finishing 2-for-2 with an RBI double.

Eli Jones and Jace Parnin both finished 1-for-3, with Jones recording an RBI.

Zach Gaspar went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer, and Jack Amis finished 0-for-3 with an RBI.

GAME 3

Byson Arthur hit an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning to put the Bears ahead 1-0.

Brescia scoring two runs in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead, however, Shawnee State responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead 4-2.

Jace Parnin hit an RBI single and Wyatt Haupt drove in two on a single down the left-field line.

Byson Arthur hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth to extend the Bears' lead to 5-2.

Brescia scored two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to tie the game 5-5.

Jack Amis hit an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to retake the lead 6-5.

The Bearcats scored twice in the top of the sixth to lead 7-6, before Shawnee State scored four in the bottom of the inning to jump ahead 10-7.

Jace Parnin hit a game-tying solo home run, before Diego Mendoza hit a two-RBI single to center field. Mendoza scored on the same play as an error was committed while he attempted to advance to second base.

Parnin hit his second solo home run of the day in the eighth, extending Shawnee State's lead to  11-7.

Trevor Ollier held Brescia scoreless in the ninth, as Shawnee State avoided the series sweep with an 11-7 win over the Bearcats.

Carson Wireman earned the win, allowing one run on three hits and one walk over 1 1/3 innings while striking out one.

Jace Parnin went 3-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI, hit second multi-homer game of the season.

Diego Mendoza also finished 3-for-5 while driving in two.

Owen Elsey and Wyatt Haupt both batted 2-for-3, with Haupt recording two RBI.

Jack Amis and Nolan Austin both finished 1-for-3.

Larry Drake and Byson Arthur both went 1-for-4, with Arthur driving in two.

Shawnee State will be the No. 4 seed for the River States Conference tournament at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, which begins Thursday, April 30, and will be slated to face the No. 3-seeded Midway Eagles.
