Box Score 3 PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- With a three-game sweep of IU Kokomo over the weekend, Shawnee State (27-14, 15-9) moved into outright third place in the River States Conference standings.
The Bears are three games behind Oakland City and four back of IU Southeast.
GAME 1
IU Kokomo jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first, however, the Bears answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the Cougars' lead to 4-3.
Jack Amis hit a two-run home run, his fourth in as many games, and
Byson Arthur hit an RBI single to left field.
Shawnee State scored six runs in the third inning, highlighted by a solo home run from
Diego Mendoza, a two-run homer by
Jack Amis, a three-run blast by
Larry Drake and an RBI single by Mendoza.
The Cougars scored twice in the fifth to cut the Bears' lead to 9-6.
Diego Mendoza hit a sacrifice fly and
Jack Amis recorded an RBI single in the bottom of the inning, extending Shawnee State's advantage to 11-6.
IU Kokomo scored a run in the top of the sixth, but the Bears plated four runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 15-7.
Eli Jones and
Larry Drake hit RBI singles,
Byson Arthur legged out an RBI triple and Jones scored on a defensive error.
Jones' RBI single marked
his 100th career hit at Shawnee State.
Jace Parnin hit an RBI single to left field in the eighth inning to push the Bears' lead to 16-7.
Evan Hood held the Cougars scoreless in the ninth to secure the series-opening win for Shawnee State.
Hood recorded a three inning save, allowing no runs on one hit over three innings.
Owen Elsey earned the win, allowing two earned runs on six hits and four walks over six innings while striking out five.
Byson Arthur went 4-for-5 with a triple and two RBI, while
Jack Amis finished 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI.
Eli Jones,
Zach Gaspar and
Diego Mendoza each batted 2-for-4, with Mendoza hitting a home run and driving in three.
Larry Drake went 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBI, while
Jace Parnin finished 2-for-6 with an RBI.
Mason Reid batted 1-for-4 with an RBI.
GAME 2
The second game of the series started in similar fashion, as IU Kokomo jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first.

Byson Arthur each hit an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to cut the Cougars' lead to 6-3.
IU Kokomo added two more runs in the top of the second, before
Diego Mendoza slugged a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame to make it 8-5.
Jace Parnin hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third to bring the Bears within two at 8-6.
The Cougars added another run in the top of the fifth, however, Shawnee State answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 9-9.
Byson Arthur and
Owen Elsey each hit an RBI double and
Eli Jones drove in a run on a single to right field.
IU Kokomo scored two runs in the eighth to retake the lead 11-9.
Zach Gaspar hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 11-11.
Both teams went scoreless in the ninth, sending the game into extra innings.
The Cougars scored in the top of the 11th to lead Shawnee State 12-11.
Nolan Austin led off the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to tie the game at 12-12.
Eli Jones then doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a walk-off sacrifice fly by
Jace Parnin as the Bears secured the series with the 13-12 win.
Seth Meade was credited with the win, allowing one earned run on three hits in the top of the 11th while striking out two.
Diego Mendoza went 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBI, and was walked four times.
Eli Jones finished 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while
Jace Parnin batted 3-for-6 with a home run and two RBI.
Zach Gaspar went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI, while
Byson Arthur finished 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI.
Jack Amis batted 1-for-5 and
Owen Elsey went 1-for-1 with an RBI double.
GAME 3
For the third consecutive game, IU Kokomo opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first.
Zach Gaspar hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the frame to give the Bears a 3-1 lead.
Byson Arthur slugged a solo home run in the fourth, extending Shawnee State's advantage to 4-1.
The Cougars scored twice in the seventh to cut their deficit to 4-3.
Nolan Austin hit his second home run of the series in the bottom of the inning to push Shawnee State's lead to 5-3.
IU Kokomo added another run in the eighth, but it wasn't enough as the Bears held on for the 5-4 win to sweep the weekend series.
Ricardo Medrano earned the win, allowing one earned run on nine hits and two walks over six innings while striking out three.
Nolan Austin went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, and
Eli Jones batted 1-for-3.
Zach Gaspar and
Byson Arthur each went 1-for-4 with Gaspar hitting a three-run homer and Arthur a solo shot.
Jace Parnin and
Diego Mendoza both finished 1-for-4.
