Box Score 3 PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- In Branch Rickey Park's first home series of the season, Shawnee State (15-7, 7-2) won one of three games against Kentucky Christian.
GAME ONE (Friday)
Kentucky Christian started the series' scoring with a pair of runs across the second and third innings to lead Shawnee State 2-0.
Wyatt Haupt drove in a run on a fielder's choice in the fourth and
Larry Drake hit a two-run homer in the fifth to give the Bears a 3-2 advantage.
The Knights tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth before
Jace Parnin and
Wyatt Haupt hit back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom of the inning, giving the Bears a 5-3 lead.
Kentucky Christian scored three runs in the eighth and five in the ninth to lead Shawnee State 11-5 going into the bottom of the ninth.
The Bears scored three runs in the inning, highlighted by RBI singles from
Diego Mendoza and
Jace Parnin and an RBI triple by
Zach Gaspar, however, Shawnee State's rally wasn't enough, as the Knights held on for an 11-8 win.
Trevor Ollier took the loss for Shawnee State, allowing three earned runs on four hits across 1 1/3 innings while striking out two.
Byson Arthur went 3-for-5 with a triple, while
Wyatt Haupt and
Diego Mendoza each finished 2-for-5. Mendoza drove in one, and Haupt added a home run, double and two RBI.
Jace Parnin went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, and
Zach Gaspar batted 2-for-3 with an RBI triple.
Larry Drake,
Jack Amis and
Eli Jones recorded one hit apiece, with Drake adding a home run and two RBI and Jones a double.
GAME TWO (Saturday)
Kentucky Christian jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second inning on Saturday before Shawnee State responded in the bottom half as
Jace Parnin hit his second solo home run in as many games.
The Bears scored four runs in the fourth, highlighted by
Byson Arthur scoring on a fielder's choice,
Jace Parnin scoring on a defensive error and
Eli Jones driving in two with a double to cut the Knights' lead to 6-5.
The Knights responded with five more runs in the fifth, extending their lead to 11-5.
Shawnee State added a run in the eighth as
Wyatt Haupt scored on a wild pitch, but the Bears fell to the Knights 11-6.
Wyatt Haupt was credited with the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits and a walk over two innings while striking out two.
Jace Parnin went 2-for-3 with a solo homer in the second inning, and
Byson Arthur went 1-for-5 with a double.
Diego Mendoza batted 1-for-3, and the trio of
Wyatt Haupt,
Nolan Austin and
Eli Jones recorded one hit apiece. Haupt legged out a triple, Austin recorded a double and an RBI and Jones hit a two-RBI double in the fourth.
GAME THREE (Saturday)
The third game of the series had the least amount of scoring, as both starting pitchers kept opposing batters off the bases for the first three innings.
Kentucky Christian broke the 0-0 tie as Harrison Simpson homered in the fourth to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.
Shawnee State answered with four runs in the fifth, highlighted by an RBI double by
Jack Amis, RBI single from
Byson Arthur and a two-RBI single by
Wyatt Haupt.
Leading 4-1, the Bears added an insurance run in the sixth as
Nolan Austin doubled to score
Larry Drake.
Carson Wireman held the Knights scoreless for the remainder of the game, helping Shawnee State avoid a three-game sweep with a 5-1 win over Kentucky Christian.
Wireman earned the win, allowing one run on four hits and a walk over seven innings while striking out four.
Jack Amis and
Byson Arthur each finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, with Amis adding a double in the fifth.
Wyatt Haupt with 1-for-3 with two RBI and
Nolan Austin batted 1-for-3 with an RBI double.
