Box Score 2 WEST POINT, Ga. -- Behind a doubleheader sweep on Saturday, Shawnee State (3-1, 0-0) secured the weekend series from Point, three games to one.
GAME ONE
The Bears and Skyhawks were scoreless through three innings in Saturday's first game, as Shawnee State's
Owen Elsey and Point's Vittorio Iacobucci each held their opposing lineups in check the first time through.
Shawnee State opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Byson Arthur, who laced a one-out single to center field, stole second base and eventually came around to score on a Point defensive error.
Jack Amis and
Nolan Austin lined back-to-back RBI singles into center field to give the Bears a 3-0 lead over Point in the middle of the fourth.
Shawnee State padded its lead in the fifth inning as
Byson Arthur singled to left field, scoring
Larry Drake and
Eli Jones to extend the Bears' lead to 5-0.
The Bears added three more runs in the sixth as
Eli Jones grounded into a fielder's choice to score
Jack Amis, and
Larry Drake doubled to left center to score Kyle Gillespie and
Nolan Austin, giving Shawnee State an 8-0 lead in the middle of the sixth.
Owen Elsey's spotless outing ended in the bottom of the sixth inning when he allowed a lead-off double to Arwin Burgos, who later scored on an RBI single by Brady Bye.
Shawnee State added four runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by
Eli Jones' sacrifice fly that scored
Nolan Austin,
Bryce Wilfert's two-run double and
Byson Arthur's RBI single to secure the Bears'Â 12-1 win over Point.
Owen Elsey earned the win, allowing one run on four hits over five innings with four strikeouts and no walks.
Byson Arthur finished 3-for-4 with a walk, two RBI and a run scored.
Larry Drake went 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, two runs scored and an RBI.
Bryce Wilfert, in one plate appearance, doubled, drove in a run and scored a run.
Jack Amis finished 1-for-2 with a walk, two runs scored an an RBI.
Nolan Austin also went 1-for-2 at the plate with a walk, two runs scored an an RBI.
Eli Jones doubled, knocked in two runs and scored once in three plate appearances.
GAME TWO
The second game of Saturday's doubleheader began much differently, as Shawnee State and Point combined for four runs in the first two innings, with the Bears leading 3-1 entering the third.
Diego Mendoza singled in the top of the first to score
Larry Drake, while Point's Bailey Stroud scored on a fielder's choice to tie the game at 1-1.
Shawnee State took a 3-1 lead in the second inning on an RBI double by
Jack Amis and an RBI single from
Eli Jones.
The Bears' 3-1 lead held until the sixth inning, when
Mason Reid hit a solo home run over the left-field wall to extend Shawnee State's lead to 4-1.
One inning later,
Nolan Austin doubled down the left field line to score
Eli Jones and give the Bears a 5-1 advantage.
Jonathan Kolhman drove in a run with a double in the seventh and later scored on a defensive miscue, cutting Shawnee State's lead to 5-3 entering the eighth.
Shawnee State scored once more in the ninth on a
Zach Gaspar sacrifice fly, and
Trevor Ollier struck out the side in the bottom half to secure the 6-3 victory.
Wyatt Haupt earned the win, allowing one run on one hit over five innings while issuing four walks and hitting one batter.
Trevor Ollier earned his first save of the season, tossing two scoreless innings with one hit allowed and three strikeouts.
Diego Mendoza went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while
Jack Amis also finished 2-for-4 with a double, run scored and an RBI.
Eli Jones finished 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored, and
Zach Gaspar had one hit on four plate appearances with an RBI.
Nolan Austin and
Jace Parnin each had one hit in four plate appearances, with Austin driving in a run and Parnin drawing two walks.
Mason Reid finished 1-for-4 with a solo home run in the sixth inning.
