Box Score 2 WEST POINT, Ga. -- Shawnee State (1-1, 0-0) opened its season Friday at Point University, with the teams splitting a doubleheader.
GAME ONE
The Bears benefited from a two-out rally in the first inning as
Diego Mendoza doubled from the three spot, and was quickly driven in by
Byson Arthur who singled to left field to put Shawnee State ahead 1-0 in the top of the first.
Point then answered in the bottom of the second, as Oscar Soto flew out to right field to drive in Damian Hernandez on a sacrifice fly to tie the game a 1-1.
The game did not remain tied for long, as
Larry Drake led off the third with a single and scored on a throwing error two batters later to give Shawnee State a 2-1 lead.
Ricardo Medrano, who started on the mound for the Bears, settled in over the next 3.1 innings, allowing zero runs on two hits and one walk before being replaced by
Carson Wireman in the sixth inning with one out.
Wireman would throw 1.2 shutout innings to start off Shawnee State's 2026 season with a win over the Skyhawks.
Ricardo Medrano earned the win with a final line of 5.1 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 SO.
Carson Wireman recorded the save, tossing 1 2/3 innings and giving up one hit and one walk while hitting a batter and striking out one.
At the plate,
Diego Mendoza finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored, while
Larry Drake also went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Owen Elsey,
Eli Jones and
Byson Arthur all went 1-for-3, with Arthur knocking in the Bears' lone RBI.
Jace Parnin finished 1-for-2.
GAME TWO
The Skyhawks struck first in Game 2, plating a pair of runs in the opening inning to take a 2-0 lead.
Point extended its lead in the second when Easton Harrison scored on a Shawnee State error to make it 3-0.
Over the next two innings, Shawnee State chipped away at the Skyhawks' lead as
Larry Drake drove in
Mason Reid on a fielder's choice in the third and
Byson Arthur later scored on a Point throwing error in the fourth to make it 3-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, Tommy Hoye singled up the middle to drive in Brady Bye, giving Point a 4-2 lead over the Bears.
A half inning later in the top of the sixth,
Byson Arthur ripped an RBI double to right field, scoring
Larry Drake to cut Point's lead to 4-3.
Over the next three innings, Point held Shawnee State scoreless while adding runs in the sixth and eighth innings to take a 7-3 victory and split the doubleheader.
Zane Hendrickx, who started the game for Shawnee State, was credited with the loss with a final line of 3.1 IP, 3 ER, 6 H, 1 BB, 2 HBP, 3 SO.
Byson Arthur went 3-for-4 at the dish with two doubles, an RBI and one run scored.
Larry Drake finished 1-for-3 with a run scored, a walk and an RBI.
Mason Reid also laced a double while going 1-for-4 with one run scored.
Austin Charles went 1-for-3, while
Eli Jones finished 1-for-2.
