FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Shawnee State (1-3, 0-0) dropped its final match of the Thorobred Classic in four sets (24-26, 13-25, 25-22, 25-20) to Georgetown (Ky.) Saturday afternoon at the William Exum Center.
Set 1
Shawnee State jumped to a 5-0 start with
Jalynn West contributing three aces and two assists.
The Tigers responded, narrowing the gap to 5-3.
Shawnee State and Georgetown traded points through the middle of the set, with the Tigers holding a 17-16 lead.
A service ace by West tied the set at 17, but a series of attack errors allowed the Tigers to regain momentum, pushing ahead 20-19.
Despite a late surge to reach 24, Shawnee State fell behind in the closing moments as the Tigers secured the set 26-24.
Set 2
The Tigers established early control, taking a 10-5 lead.
Georgetown used a 10-4 run to extend its lead over the Bears to 20-9.
Shawnee State's efforts to close the gap fell short, as the Tigers sealed the set, 25-13, to take a 2-0 match lead.
Set 3
Georgetown opened the third frame strong with a 6-1 advantage.
Shawnee State responded with a key sequence, narrowing the gap to 9-6 after consecutive kills from
Katelynn Boerger and
Kaylee McInnis.
Trailing 16-9, the Bears scored went on a 9-1 run behind kills from
Camille McIntosh and
Bree Hicks to lead Georgetown 18-17.
The Tigers tied the set at 18-18 before Shawnee State responded with three straight kills from McIntosh, Hicks and
Addy Brewster, along with a block from
Natalie Reida, to take a 22-18 lead.
Georgetown answered with four consecutive points to tie the set at 22-22 before kills from Hicks, McInnis and Brewster closed out the frame, 25-22, as Shawnee State forced a fourth set.
Set 4
The Tigers jumped out to a 6-0 lead to begin the fourth set and maintained their advantage through the middle of the frame at 10-6.
Georgetown scored eight consecutive points to extend its lead to 18-6, but Shawnee State responded with a 6-0 run, highlighted by kills from McInnis and Boerger, to cut the deficit to 18-12.
Trailing 22-14, Shawnee State rattled off four consecutive kills from McInnis, Hicks and McIntosh to cut the deficit to 22-18 late in the frame.
Despite the late rally, Georgetown scored three of the final five points to claim the set, 25-20, and secure the 3-1 match victory.
Bears by the Numbers
Bree Hicks led the Bears with a season-high 15 kills. The sophomore's 45 kills through the first weekend lead the team through four matches.
Kaylee McInnis had nine kills and three aces, both of which were the second-most on the team. The freshman is currently second on the team in kills (37) and leads the program with eight service aces.
Jalynn West led the Bears with 16 assists and four aces. West currently ranks third in the Mountain East Conference with 81 assists on the season.
Natalie Reida recorded a team-high four blocks and leads Shawnee State with 14 through 16 sets played.
Mylee Gleim paced the Bears with 17 digs for the third consecutive game. The freshman leads Shawnee State with 56, while the second most on the team in 33 (
Graci Claxon).
Cally Carpenter posted 12 assists and 15 digs, marking the second consecutive match she's reached double figures in both categories.
Addy Brewster recorded her first collegiate kill in the third set.

Shawnee State returns to action Friday, Sept. 4, traveling to Alumni Hall in Columbus, Ohio, to face West Virginia Wesleyan in a nonconference match. First serve is set for 12:15 p.m.
