COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Shawnee State (1-4, 0-0) lost to West Virginia Weseyan in five sets Friday afternoon at Alumni Hall.
Set 1
Trailing 5-3 in the opening set, Shawnee State rallied with a 7-0 run behind three aces by
Graci Claxon and kills from
Bree Hicks and
Natalie Reida to take a 10-5 lead.
The Bobcats fought back to tie the set at 13-13, however, the Bears jumped back in front 20-17 with kills from
Camille Hall,
Whytney Faulkner and Hicks.
Despite West Virginia Wesleyan cutting its deficit to 21-20, Shawnee State closed the frame on a 4-1 run to win the set, 25-21, and take a 1-0 match lead.
Set 2
The Bobcats jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the second frame before the Bears responded with a 7-1 run, highlighted by kills from Katelynn Boerger, Kaylee McInnis and Hicks, to tie the set at 9-9.
Shawnee State and West Virginia Wesleyan traded points throughout the frame, with neither team taking a lead larger than two until the match was tied at 21-21.
The Bobcats finished the set on a 4-1 run to win 25-22, and tie the match at 1-1.
Set 3
To begin the third set, Shawnee State jumped out to a 7-0 lead behind Hicks, Hall, Jalynn West and Camille McIntosh.
The Bears continued to dominate the third frame, using a 9-4 run with kills from Hall, Faulkner, Reida and Boerger to take a 16-4 lead over the Bobcats.
The back half of the set was evenly played, with the teams tying at 9-9. However, Shawnee State's early advantage was enough to secure a 25-13 victory and take a 2-1 match lead.
Set 4
With the match on the line, West Virginia Wesleyan took a 10-4 lead to begin the fourth set.
Trailing 17-12 late in the frame, Shawnee State rallied to tie the set at 19-19 behind kills from Boerger, Hall and McIntosh.
Despite the late rally from the Bears, the Bobcats closed the frame on a 6-2 run to win the set, 25-22, and force a fifth set.
Set 5
West Virginia Wesleyan jumped out to a 9-6 lead to begin the fifth set before Shawnee State answered with a 5-0 run, highlighted by an ace from West and kills by Hall, to take an 11-9 advantage.
The Bobcats fought back with a 4-0 run to retake the lead 13-11.
Despite a kill from McIntosh to make it 13-12, West Virginia Wesleyan scored the final two points to secure a 15-12 set victory and win the match, 3-2.
Bears by the Numbers
Camille Hall led the Bears with a season-high 12 kills on 18 attempts (.667).
Bree Hicks recorded 11 kills, marking the third consecutive match in which the sophomore has finished in double figures.
Natalie Reida led the Bears and tied her season high with seven blocks. Reida averaged 0.67 blocks per set last season and currently is averaging 1.00.
Graci Claxon paced Shawnee State with season highs of 17 digs and four aces.
Jalynn West dished out 28 assists, while Addy Brewster recorded 15.
