Shawnee State Splits Saturday Doubleheader with Saint Mary-of-the-Woods

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WEST PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- Shawnee State (32-10, 25-7) split Saturday's doubleheader with Saint Mary-of-the-Woods and is now two games behind Oakland City in the River States Conference standings.

GAME 1

Shawnee State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Sierra Dunnagan hit an RBI double and Gabby Adams drove in a run on a single to center field.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods' Bailey Duke hit a solo home run in the second to cut the Bears' lead to 2-1.

Kennedy Davis and Emily Moore scored on a defensive error in the fourth, and Haley Myers hit an RBI single to center field to extend Shawnee State's lead to 5-1.

The Pomeroys scored four runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 5-5, and held the Bears scoreless in the bottom of the inning to send the game into extras.

SMWC's Bailey Duke hit a solo home run, her second of the day, in the top of the eighth to give the Pomeroys their first lead of the game at 6-5.

Shawnee State did not score in the bottom of the eighth, falling to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods 6-5.

Madison Franz took the loss, allowing five runs -- two earned -- on four hits and two walks in one inning while striking out one.

Jenna Christopher and Haley Myers each went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Sierra Dunnagan and Gabby Adams both finished 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Sydney Skiver went 1-for-3 with a double and Emily Moore batted 1-for-4.

GAME 2

Both teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning when Lexie Lockwood hit a one-bouncer back to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods' pitcher, who threw it over the head of the Pomeroys' first baseman, allowing Keegan Uhl to score from second base and giving the Bears a 1-0 walk-off win.

Gabby McConnell earned the win, tossing seven innings of one-hit, shutout softball while striking out nine.

McConnell earned three wins on the week, only allowing two earned runs over 19 innings while striking out 11.

Two of McConnell's wins were complete game shutouts.

Keegan Uhl went 2-for-3 and scored the game-winning run.

Gabby Adams finished 1-for-3 with a double, while Sydney Skiver and Kennedy Davis both batted 1-for-2.

Shawnee State returns to action Tuesday, April 21, when it travels to the UC Softball Complex in Williamsburg, Kentucky for two games against No. 18 Cumberlands at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
