Shawnee State Splits Saturday Doubleheader with West Virginia Tech

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BECKLEY, W. Va. -- Shawnee State (18-6, 13-3) sits 2½ games back of Oakland City in the River States Conference following a doubleheader split with West Virginia Tech on Saturday.

GAME 1

Jenna Christopher either scored or drove in all three runs for Shawnee State in the series opener Friday, beginning with the senior's steal of home in the first inning.

Christopher then stole home for the second time in the fifth inning, extending the Bears' lead to 2-0.

In the top of the sixth, Christopher drove in Kennedy Davis on an RBI fielder's choice, pushing Shawnee State's advantage to 3-0.

In the bottom of the seventh, Abbie Deeds retired the side in order to secure the win for the Bears.

Deeds earned the win, tossing seven scoreless innings on two hits while striking out nine.

The outing marked Deeds' second complete-game shutout, her first seven-inning effort.

The freshman's nine strikeouts are the second-most she has recorded in a single outing this season.

Jenna Christopher, Sierra Dunnagan, Gabby Adams and Kennedy Davis each finished 2-for-4. Davis recorded a double, and Christopher an RBI and two runs scored.

Haley Myers went 1-for-4, while Sydney Skiver and Keegan Uhl both batted 1-for-3.

GAME 2

Shawnee State fell behind 4-0 in the first inning after West Virginia Tech hit a two-RBI double and a two-RBI triple.

The Bears began to chip away at the Golden Bears' lead in the third inning as Gabby Adams recorded an RBI fielder's choice.

Sierra Dunnagan doubled in the fifth, scoring Jenna Christopher to cut West Virginia Tech's lead to 4-2.

In the bottom of the inning, the Golden Bears plated to more runs to extend their lead to 6-2.

Shawnee State went scoreless over the final two innings as West Virginia Tech held on for the series-splitting win.

Gabby McConnell took the loss, allowing five earned runs on four hits and four walks over four innings while striking out four.

Jenna Christopher batted 2-for-4, while Emily Moore and Sierra Dunnagan each went 2-for-3 with a double. Dunnagan drove in a run in the fifth.

Haley Myers went 1-for-4, while Gabby Adams and Kennedy Davis both finished 1-for-3. Adams brought in a run in the third.

Shawnee State returns to action Sunday, March 29, when it hosts Rio Grande for two games at Doc Singleton Park in West Portsmouth, Ohio, at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
