Cracraft, Kearns in top-10; SSU 'A' squad third on men's golf side after Day 1 of Maggie Mountain Invitational

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. -- Shawnee State junior golfers Trey Cracraft and Max Kearns each shot three-over 73s and the men's golf program at Shawnee State received an 18-over 298 from its 'A' squad and a 26-over 306 from its 'B' squad to sit in a tie for third and solo possession of eighth, respectively, in the 15-team Maggie Mountain Invitational, which is being hosted by Alice Lloyd College at Stonecrest Golf Course in Prestonsburg, Ky.

Cracraft, who posted pars on 14 holes, and Kearns, who posted pars on 13 greens, were each consistent through much of the day. Each player posted one birdie as well with Cracraft notching a three on the par four, 431-yard 15th hole and Kearns birding the 390-yard, par three seventh.

Both players sit in a tie for seventh place on the present leaderboard and are just two strokes back of second place as a result.

Following them, Shawnee State graduate student Tanner Stevenson led the 'B' team's efforts, nabbing a four-over 74 to tie for 11th place on the opening day in the 81-player field. Stevenson posted pars on 12 greens and birdied the first hole, a 428-yard par-four.

Logan Hughes, who was on the 'A' team with Cracraft and Kearns, followed with a five-over 75. Hughes notched pars on nine holes and birdied the ninth hole -- a 451 par four -- and the 17th hole -- a 194-yard par three. The senior sits in a tie for 17th place on the leaderboard.

In the first collegiate tournament of his career, South Webster graduate Owen Mault shot a six-over 76 to place second among the 'B' team participants. Mault collected nine pars with the freshman adding in birdies on the 204-yard par three (eighth hole), the 570-yard par five (14th hole) and the 431-yard par four (15th hole). Mault sits in a tie for 22nd overall in the field.

Senior golfer Ross Ferrell and junior Kyle Salamon rounded out the Shawnee State players who finished in the top half of the field, as both individuals tied for 28th overall. Ferrell posted 10 pars and birdied the 451-yard par four on the ninth hole as well as the 431-yard par four on the 15th hole, while Salamon posted 11 pars as well as a birdie on the 172-yard par three, which was the fifth hole.

Jason Price (41st), Hunter Freeman (t-54th) and Breestin Schweickart (t-62nd) rounded out Shawnee State's efforts over the opening day of competition at the Maggie Mountain Invitational.

Team-wise, Shawnee State's 'A' squad sits just two strokes back of West Virginia Tech for second place on the leaderboard. Pikeville, who shot a nine-over 289 as a team, leads the tournament by seven strokes as a team. Pikeville's Jon Bryant, who shot a three-under 67, is the individual leader by four strokes.

Shawnee State will be competing on the second and final day of the Maggie Mountain Invitational Tuesday.
