PRESTONSBURG, Ky. -- The Shawnee State women's golf duo of
Aly Wellman and
Olivia Lewis each posted strong first round performances on the opening day of the University of Pikeville Fall Invitational, as Wellman posted a fourth-place round while Lewis showed up eighth in a field of 21 women's golfers in the event, which is being held at Stonecrest Golf Course in Prestonsburg, Ky.
Wellman, who shot an 86, sits in UPike Fall Invitational All-Tournament Team position and is just five strokes back of second place, sitting in a tie with Bryan (Tenn.)'s Madison Hughes for fourth place on the leaderboard. The junior posted a birdie on the seventh hole, a 365-yard par five, and also posted pars on seven additional holes, including the following:
- Hole 1, 366-yard par four
- Hole 5, 116-yard par three
- Hole 6, 377-yard par four
- Hole 8, 161-yard par three
- Hole 12, 351-yard par five
- Hole 13, 356-yard par four
- Hole 15, 378-yard par four
As for Lewis, the true freshman from West Union posted her new career-best round of 89 and sits just three strokes back of Wellman as well as a top-five position overall. Lewis birdied the 18th hole, a 290-yard par four, and posted pars on six greens, which include the following:
- Hole 2, 443-yard par five
- Hole 3, 356-yard par four
- Hole 6, 377-yard par four
- Hole 7, 365-yard par five
- Hole 11, 128-yard par three
- Hole 13, 356-yard par four

Brynna Spencer (tied for 12th),

Saylor Crace (18th) rounded out the finishing order for Shawnee State on the opening day of the UPike Fall Invitational.
Team-wise, Shawnee State shot a 368 -- 22 strokes back of the UPike Fall Invitational leader, Spartanburg Methodist (S.C.), for the top spot in the team standings. The Bears are 10 strokes ahead of third-place Bluefield (Va.) and 22 ahead of fourth-place Bryan (Tenn.) in the rundown.
Second round action begins Tuesday morning as the same quintet finish off play with the final round of action at Stonecrest Golf Course in Prestonsburg, Ky.
