Ababay, Changar help SSU men hold firm grip on second place finish to conclude Dr. Dillery Fall Frenzy

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The men's swimming program at Shawnee State closed out an impressive effort on the second and final day of the Dr. Dillery Fall Frenzy Saturday evening, as Shawnee State swimmers Kutay Ababay and Josiah Changar continued impressing throughout while Alex Ray and Malik Nelson put together strong performances in the 200 yard backstroke and Shawnee State's 200 yard medley relay and 400 yard freestyle relay teams all faired well to conclude the last day of the prestigeous event, which was held at the Doris and Bob Holloway Health and Wellness Center on the campus of Lindsey Wilson University in Columbia, Ky.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS

Changar, who placed second overall in the 100 yard backstroke, posted another impressive effort by swimming a 54.12 in the event to put himself within striking distance of a NAIA provisional cut time in his first official collegiate swim meet and scoring 17 points in the event.

As for Ababay, the talented freshman from Turkey continued stacking up top-five finishes of his own, placing fourth out of 23 swimmers in the 200 yard freestyle and reaching out to grab fourth out of 34 swimmers in the 100 yard freestyle. Like Changar, Ababay is also within striking distance of NAIA provisional cut times in those events, finishing just three-tenths of a second back of a NAIA provisional cut in the 100 yard freestyle. He scored 30 points between the two events.

The stout times from the pair come after the duo each came within three-tenths of a second of hitting a NAIA provisional cut in the 50 yard freestyle on Friday.

In addition to the swimming of the above two individuals, Ray and Nelson also added in top-five showings. Ray, who swam a 2:10.44 in the 200 yard backstroke, finished fifth out of 12 swimmers in that event in a great performance, while Nelson, himself a budding star, finished fifth out of 21 swimmers in the 100 yard freestyle, posting a 54.24. Each individual scored 14 points apiece with those finishes.

From a relay team standpoint, the 200 yard medley relay and 400 yard freestyle relay squads were both impressive in Saturday's meet.

In the 200 yard medley relay, the 'A' squad of Ababay, Changar, Nelson and Josiah Ramdeen swam a stout 1:39.33 to place third out of the 16 relay teams in the event, while the Shawnee State 'B' unit of Ray, Robert Gibson, Tony Goodwin and Luke Lunsford were also quick, posting a 1:41.59 en route to beating three 'A' teams in the event. Shawnee State scored 60 points off of the performances of those two squads alone.

As for the 400 yard freestyle relay, the Shawnee State 'A' team was again strong as Ababay, Gibson, Goodwin and Nelson swam a 3:18.65 to finish third in a 13-swimmer field, concluding the top performers for the Shawnee State men's swimming camp.
