Nelson earns first career Mid-South Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week honor

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Having set three NAIA provisional cut times of his own as well as a standard cut relay time, Shawnee State junior Malik Nelson parlayed those marks into his first career Mid-South Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week honor, as Nelson posted three NAIA provisional cuts in the 50 and 100 yard freestyles and the 100 yard butterfly as well as a standard relay mark in the 200 yard freestyle relay. The honor for Nelson was announced Monday afternoon.

Nelson was tremendous in Shawnee State's meet at the Wooster Invitational against 8 NCAA D-IIIs and NCAA D-II Frostburg State, setting the three provisional cuts and helping the 200 yard freestyle relay squad set a standard cut by swimming the fastest leg of the event of any swimmer on the last leg at a 20.51.

The 200 yard freestyle relay group finished second at the Wooster Invitational, just over two-tenths behind Mount Union's winning mark, while Nelson's 50 yard freestyle time of 21.20 was good for third in the final order out of the 49 swimmers that competed in the 50 free. Nelson also finished sixth of 33 swimmers in the 100 yard butterfly, fourth out of 24 swimmers in the 100 yard freestyle and helped the 400 yard freestyle relay squad finish fifth with a 3:14.02.

Overall, Nelson helped contribute to 229 of Shawnee State's 849 points as a team over the course of the three-day event.
