PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- The women's basketball program at Shawnee State got 36 points combined from
Miyoshi Ellis and Nyah Chambers as well as 10 tallies from
Lauren Hawthorne off of the bench, but the Bears fell in a 78-62 decision to the No. 18-ranked Cumberlands (Ky.) Patriots' women's basketball program Friday evening.
Shawnee State forced 13 Cumberlands (Ky.) turnovers and turned those Patriot miscues into 16 points, but were outrebounded by a plus-24 margin on the glass (53-29) and were held to 25-of-69 shooting (36.2 percent) in the contest.
Ellis led Shawnee State with 21 points and four assists and tied for the team lead with two steals while Chambers added in 15 points while matching a team-best with five rebounds. The latter also went 6-of-12 from the field and posted two assists to boot.
Hawthorne scored her 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting to lead the bench production while
Savannah Cantrell tallied six points and five rebounds on 2-of-3 shooting in 15 minutes off of the pine as well.
Shawnee State (7-3) will return to action Wednesday, Dec. 10 -- when the Bears play host to West Virginia Tech in the River States Conference opener for both teams at Waller Gymnasium in Portsmouth. The game's tip off is set for 5:30 p.m., preceding the men's basketball program's tip off against West Virginia Tech as well in its own conference opener.
