Box Score PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — Shawnee State (8-3, 1-0) defeated West Virginia Tech (WV) (7-2, 0-1), 91-59, at Waller Gymnasium in Wednesday evening's River States Conference opener. The victory marked Shawnee State's sixth consecutive win over the Golden Bears, and their sixteenth in 17 meetings.
Shawnee State opened up the evening with a 48-27 first half lead over West Virginia Tech -- largely behind a 32-16 second quarter effort that was led by senior
Miyoshi Ellis and junior
Kyla Torok who combined for 15 points in the frame with eight and seven, respectively.
Despite a strong third quarter showing that saw the Golden Bears outscore Shawnee State 25-18, SSU would hold on for its eighth win of the season with a 25-point fourth quarter, while holding West Virginia Tech to seven.
Sophomore guard
Jonilyah Chambers finished with a game and season-high 19 points on 9-of-15 shooting, along with one steal, rebound and assist, respectively. Chambers also accounted for half of the Bears' 16 points in the first quarter, notching eight of her eventual 19 on the night.
Ellis added 18 points, four steals, three assists and three rebounds in the winning effort. Ellis is averaging a team-high 16.4 points-per-game through 11 contests this season.
Torok accounted for 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting with four rebounds and an assist.
Nine other Bears registered between two and eight points on the night, including 27 from the bench.
Shawnee State shot 6-of-12 (50%) from beyond the arc, which is well-above the team's 31.2% conversion rate from three-point-range this season.
