Box Score 2 PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- The men's and women's soccer programs at Shawnee State dropped a pair of River States Conference contests against Rio Grande Thursday evening, with the women's squad falling by a 2-0 count and the men dropping a 5-0 decision to the RedStorm in a pair of contests that were held at Shawnee Turf.
Competing admirably in terms of effort, the Shawnee State women's soccer program, playing a player down for the entirety of the second half, played straight up with Rio Grande throughout much of the match, with the RedStorm posting a scant 8-7 shot advantage despite playing with a player up. A 66th minute goal by Sara Estrada Fernandez and a 90th minute salvo by Stephanie Beaulieu proved to be the difference in the match.
As for the Shawnee State men's soccer program, the Bears honored seven seniors --
Nikos Pontikis,
Alfie Maynard,
Marco Riva,
Clement Akanyah, Belo Bitencourt, Trevor Aviero Masanjala and
Ephraim Mutombo -- for their efforts at Shawnee State Thursday evening. Pontikis, Riva, Bitencourt, Masanjala and Mutombo have played at Shawnee State for each of the last four seasons and have contributed to 32 wins across their time at SSU while Akanyah (21 wins) and Maynard (15 victories) have also been critical in positive results for the Bears. All seven players have either started or seen significant time on the pitch as reserves for Shawnee State in the contest.
Shawnee State's women's soccer program is 3-11-1 and 2-5 in the River States Conference and will finish the 2025 season out with its final three regular season contests on the road against Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (Saturday, Oct. 25, 3:30 p.m.), Midway (Thursday, Oct. 30, 5 p.m.) and Indiana-Kokomo (Saturday, Nov. 1, 5 p.m.). The men's soccer program at Shawnee State is still alive in its quest to not only play in postseason action but host a conference tournament game, as the Bears can seal up the No. 4 spot in the River States Conference Standings and host a quarterfinal match if Shawnee State defeats Saint Mary-of-the-Woods in a Saturday afternoon match at 1 p.m in Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind. The Bears then will travel to Midway on Thursday, Oct. 30 for its final regular season match of 2025, with first kick set for 7:30 p.m. in Midway.
