Game Recap: Baseball |

Bears fall in three-game series to Oakland City (11-6, 8-2, 7-2)

In a River States Conference series that was held Saturday and Sunday, the Shawnee State baseball program fell to the Oakland City Mighty Oaks' baseball program, dropping 11-6, 8-2 and 7-2 decisions in a trio of contests that were held in Oakland City, Ind.

Shawnee State notched 18 hits between the three contests but couldn't hold Oakland City's offense down on the opposite side of the spectrum, as the Mighty Oaks collected 35 hits over the three-game set while scoring 26 runs in all.

Game 1 -- Saturday, March 16, Oakland City 11, Shawnee State 6

After falling behind by a 3-0 count after three innings of work, Shawnee State struck in the fourth salvo as after two hit by pitches, a fielding error allowed Eric Oakes and Hunter Warner to score as Shawnee State closed Oakland City's advantage to a 3-2 lead. Unfortunately, the Mighty Oaks responded with a five-run fourth frame.

In the sixth frame, a hit by pitch, a walk and a fielding error resulted in Tyler Lund shooting a three-run home run to right center field with two gone -- a clutch at-bat that again allowed Shawnee State to cut Oakland City's lead to an 8-5 margin. However, as Oakland City did in the fourth frame, the Mighty Oaks responded with a three-run sixth to seal the final result.

Zach Gaspar's solo home run in the eighth inning capped the scoring for SSU in Game 1.

Game 2 -- Saturday, March 16, Oakland City 8, Shawnee State 2

Shawnee State got its lone runs in Game 2 in the sixth inning of action, when Zach Gaspar went yard again to left field for a two-run bomb with two gone in the sixth after a two-out double by Noah Sniadach set the table for Gaspar.

Game 3 -- Sunday, March 17, Oakland City 7, Shawnee State 2

In a tight contest throughout the first five innings of Game 3, Shawnee State tied the score at two apiece as a walk by Caeleb McGraw, a single by Dylan Driskill and a walk by Tyler Lund loaded the bases for Nolan Tressler, who produced a two-RBI single that brought in Driskell and courtesy runner Eli Jones to knot the game at two apiece. Again, Oakland City had the answer as three consecutive base hits resulted in an RBI producing single for Fred Fernandez that gave Oakland City a 3-2 lead after five innings complete. The Mighty Oaks then added two insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings of play to conclude matters.
