Game Recap: Baseball |

Tressler homers twice more; SSU BB pushes winning streak to six with 13-5, 12-6 victories over Brescia (Ky.)

The baseball program at Shawnee State pounded out 34 additional hits between two contests Monday to close out a River States Conference series against Brescia (Ky.) in successful fashion.

Nolan Tressler launched one home run each in both contests to give the junior leadoff hitter three for the series, Michael De Jesus added a 4-for-5 day at the plate in Monday's first affair, and Noah Sniadach, Zach Gaspar, Hunter Warner and Ryan Scott each posted multi-hit outings in both games to lead the Bears to 13-5 and 12-6 romps over the Bearcats, pushing Shawnee State's winning streak to six games as the Bears now sit 10-10 overall on the year and a strong 5-1 in River States Conference action.

Shawnee State, who scored 39 runs on 48 hits total in the three-game sweep of Brescia between Sunday and Monday, overcame early deficits (3-1 after 3, 5-2 after an inning-and-a-half) to claim wins going away. The Bears put up a five-run fourth and a four-run eighth in the first contest, then added a six-run fifth frame in the second game to help break both RSC matchups open.

Tressler's two home runs Monday gave the Woodstock, Ga. native three for the series. The talented junior came within a two-run homer away of hitting for the home run cycle.

The effort moved Shawnee State's winning streak to six games -- and the Bears have won eight of their last nine contests in all. It's the first time that the Bears have won six in row since a stretch from Feb. 23, 2019 to March 2, 2019 -- and the first time that SSU has won eight out of its last nine affairs at any stretch during the season since Feb. 22 to March 2 of the same year.

Game 1

After getting a run on a sacrifice fly RBI from Eric Oakes to tie the score at a run apiece following the first inning of play, the Bears fell behind by a 3-1 margin through three innings complete before breaking the game open.

Following a hit batter, a wild pitch, and a single, Ryan Scott's RBI groundout produced a run and back-to-back singles by Michael De Jesus and Tyler Lund resulted in the Bears tying the score at three apiece. Nolan Tressler then went deep again to right field, as the lefty batter did Sunday, for a three-run homer that put Shawnee State ahead by a 6-3 margin after four innings of work.

A double by Scott and a single by De Jesus allowed Shawnee State to add an insurance run in the sixth frame, and in the seventh, De Jesus followed singles by Zach Gaspar and Scott with a two-RBI producing base knock of his own, pushing the SSU lead to a 9-4 count.

SSU finalized the opener with four runs in the eighth, as a one-out single by Noah Sniadach was followed by a stolen base from the senior infielder. Luis Mejia walked and Gaspar then shot an RBI base knock into play, loading the bases for Hunter Warner who shot an RBI base knock to the outfield to plate a run. A wild pitch, a sacrifice fly RBI by Scott and an RBI double by De Jesus capped the scoring for the Bears, who cruised to victory.

Game 2

In the second contest, Shawnee State overcame an early 1-0 deficit after the first half-inning of work as a walk and Diego Mendoza's single to center was followed by an RBI double by Noah Sniadach and a sacrifice fly by Zach Gaspar, putting the Bears ahead by a 2-1 margin after an inning of play.

Brescia retook a 5-2 lead after a four-run top half in the second inning, but the Bears answered in the bottom half of the frame with a three-run tally as a walk by Tyler Lund, hit by pitch and a wild pitch led to back-to-back-to-back RBI-producing singles by Noah Sniadach, Zach Gaspar and Hunter Warner that allowed the Bears to tie the score at five apiece.

Behind Nolan Tressler's fourth inning solo bomb to lead off the frame, Shawnee State briefly took a 6-5 advantage after four innings of play, but Brescia rallied to again tie the score at six on a homer to center field in the top half of the fifth inning.

Despite that, however, Shawnee State rallied for six runs in the bottom of the fifth to, once and for all, close the door on Brescia. Kyle Eslick's RBI single to right center field was followed by a two-RBI double by Tressler, and with two gone in the inning, Gaspar and Warner followed with an RBI double to left and an RBI single to center to close the books on Monday's Game 2 win.

Additional

Hunter Warner added in a 6-for-14 mark for the series with seven RBI and five runs scored while Zach Gaspar and Ryan Scott each went 5-for-11 at the plate with Gaspar posting two doubles, three RBI and four runs scored and Scott posting a double, three RBI and four runs scored.
