SSU baseball program drops doubleheader to No. 8 Cumberlands (Ky.)

The baseball program at Shawnee State dropped a pair of nonconference contests to No. 8 Cumberlands (Ky.) Thursday evening as the Bears dropped 21-3 and 16-7 decisions to the Patriots in a doubleheader that was held at Williamsburg, Ky.

Highlights

  • Zach Gaspar continued to showcase an improving skillset throughout Thursday's contests -- as the cleanup hitter combined to go 4-for-7 with two RBI and three runs scored Thursday evening.
    • Gaspar, who is hitting a team-high .385 through the first seven games of the year, has gone 8-of-15 with two home runs, eight RBI and six runs scored over the last four games alone.
  • In Game 2, Shawnee State got out to an excellent start, plating the first six runs of the contest.
    • Noah Sniadach, who doubled down the left field line and was singled home by Gaspar to plate the opening run of Game 1, doubled down the right field line and was singled home by Gaspar to give SSU a 1-0 lead after the opening frame of Game 2.
    • Shawnee State then plated five more runs in the top half of the third inning, as singles by Nolan Tressler and Sniadach and a walk by Jakobe Reese allowed Gaspar to bring in Tressler. Two fielder's choices, an RBI single by Dylan Driskill and a sacrifice fly RBI by Ryan Scott plated the remaining runs in the third as Shawnee State took a 6-0 lead through two-and-a-half innings of work.

Additional

Tressler (3-for-7, double, run scored), Sniadach (3-for-7, two doubles, walk, RBI, three runs scored), Scott (2-for-6, double, sacrifice fly, two RBI) and Driskill (2-for-5, walk, RBI) led Shawnee State offensively.

Shawnee State will be back in action Friday afternoon against No. 8 Cumberlands (Ky.) to close out the three-game series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
