Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

SSU women's tennis drops competitive match against No. 17 (ITA-NAIA), No. 19 (NAIA Coaches Poll) Indiana Wesleyan

In its first match of the spring season, the Shawnee State women's tennis program dropped a competitive match against one of the best units in the NAIA -- ultimately falling to the No. 17-ranked unit in the ITA-NAIA tennis rankings and the No. 19-ranked squad in the NAIA Coaches Poll, Indiana Wesleyan -- but not before showcasing a vast amount of improvement.

Highlights

In doubles action, Shawnee State didn't roll over for Indiana Wesleyan, as the Bears battled the Wildcats to respectable 6-3 setbacks in two out of the three doubles matches played Tuesday evening.

  • Facing a NCAA Division I transfer in France Antezana, who played at Mercer (Ga.) prior to transferring to Indiana Wesleyan as well as 2023 ITA Singles All-American and 2023 NAIA All-American Sofia Munoz, the sister combination of Lacey and Lexy Urban more than held their own, taking three doubles sets from the standout duo and closing the game to a 5-3 set deficit before falling by a 6-3 margin.
  • The same could be said for No. 3 doubles pairing Brooklyn Foose and McKenzie Harman -- who took Indiana Wesleyan's No. 3 doubles unit in Katie Parr and Ellie Snider to an identical 6-3 margin. Parr held the United States Tennis Association's (USTA) No. 1 ranking for all competitors out of the state of Iowa coming out of high school.

Additional

At No. 1 singles, Vanessa Akuaka showed great flashes playing against the 2023 NAIA All-American in Munoz, battling the sophomore to a 6-3 margin in the first set before dropping the second set by a 6-1 count.

The women's tennis program will be back in action Feb. 17 when the Bears face Cedarville (Ohio) and Thomas More (Ky.) in away bouts, which will start at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively.
