SSU Men's Soccer Team Battle in Tight Match Against the Phoenix

The Men's Soccer team would face the University of Cumberland at the Lindsey-Donnell Stadium for a tight match that would end 2-1 for the Phoenix.

The Phoenix would start the first half with the first shot of the game in the 9th minute but this one would be saved by Shawnee State keeper, Eric Green. The Phoenix would keep the high-intensity game and got another shot in minute eleven, but the ball hit the post. They would get a rebound and have another shot on goal that was saved by Eric Green. The first goal of the game was for the Phoenix and would come in minute 22 when John Azar took the corner kick for the University of Cumberland, and number twelve, Christian Chase headed the ball into the back of the net from the second post. The first half would be dominated by the Phoenix with 12 shots and two corner kicks, while the Bears would have only one shot and one corner. Eric Green would save the last shot of the first half coming from a header by Mark Donaldson for the Phoenix. The first half would end with three yellow cards, two for the Shawnee State Bears and one for the Phoenix, and the score would be 1-0 for the University of Cumberland.

After a tight first half, the Bears would come out to try to tie the game, but the first opportunity of the second half was again for the Phoenix by Phillipp Schmidtke but it would be saved by Eric Green for the Bears. It was a remarkably close game with good performances by both teams, and the Bears would get a penalty kick from a foul on Matheus Camargo in minute 83. Joao Toledo would be the brave one to take the penalty kick for the Bears, and he would put it in the back of the net with a clean shot on the ground in the left corner of the goal. It seemed like a suitable time for the Bears to try to score another goal, but the Phoenix would not let them, and instead, two minutes later, Brima Kamara scored the second goal for the Phoenix, assisted by Victor Ramirez. The game would end 2-1 for the University of Cumberland.

The SSU Men's Soccer team will hit the road to Columbia KY, to face Lindsey Wilson College next Monday, September 18th. Kick-off at 8:00 P.M.
