This past weekend, the Shawnee State Bears Volleyball team was slammed with River States Conference action. Friday evening, they traveled to Columbus, Indiana, for a match-up against the Crimson Pride of Indiana University Purdue University Columbus. Then they played the Eagles of Midway University Saturday afternoon, winning both matches 3-1 and extending their win streak to five games.
SSU vs IUPUC
The first set of this match saw a lot of back and forth between the two teams. SSU found itself up one of the Crimson Pride when Kylee Barney violently slammed two balls to the floor, forcing the IUPUC coach to call a timeout. The Bears grew their lead slightly, but not enough to run away with the set. The Pride battled back and tied the game at 19, and never looked back taking set one 25-22. Set 2 saw something a little bit different with the Bears as they grew their lead and dominated the entire set. Shawnee had kills from Bethany Colling, Megan Steele, Haidyn Wamsley, Gretchen Chaney, and more, controlling what happened during the second set. The third and fourth set was nothing but dominance from the Bears as they claimed those sets 25-13 and 25-20, to nab the victory.
SSU vs MU
After the late night of travel Friday night, SSU woke up Saturday afternoon ready to face off against the Eagles in their Pink-Out game. The two traded points back-and-forth the entire match with neither team having a real edge while dealing with the wear and tear from the night before as both teams were in action. Shawnee grabbed the first game of the afternoon as Bethany Colling and Haidyn Wamsley torched the ball past the Eagle's defense and capitalized on errors made by Midway. Early on in the second game, SSU found themselves down 12-6, but after a timeout from Coach Spriggs, battled back to tie the game at 19. Midway took advantage of miscues from the Bears to win set two. Sets three and four saw similar play throughout each from the Bears. Shawnee setter Reagan Lewis got some action on the out and took full advantage of it as she claimed herself three kills. Shawnee closed out game four with three straight kills, two from Megan Steele and one from Kylee Barney, which sealed the victory for Shawnee State.
The Bears will be back in action, looking for their sixth straight win, tomorrow evening as they travel to Beckley, West Virginia to face off against the Golden Bears of WVU Tech. The match will start at 7 PM.
