Lebanon, Tn. – Shawnee State bounced back on the road Saturday afternoon, traveling to Lebanon and defeating Cumberland 86-50.
Shawnee State shot 27 of 58 from the field for 46.6% while converting on 8 of 18 three pointers for 44.4%. The Bears found success at the free throw line as well, hitting 24 of 29 shots for 82.8%.
Cumberland finished shooting 16 of 45 for 35.6% from the field. The Phoenix were held to just 4 threes on 16 attempts for 25% and 14-19 for 73.7% from the free throw line.
Sydney King led the Bears with a dominating 22 point performance while finishing with 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Bailey Cummins had 14 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Shania Massie also finished with double figures, scoring 12 and grabbing 5 boards.
Kerrice Watson was the only player in double figures for the Phoenix with 13 points on 4-7 shooting.
Shawnee State looked locked in from the opening tip, going out to an early lead they wouldn't lose for the duration of the first quarter. By the end of the first the Bears held onto a 26-7 lead. SSU made it to the charity stripe several times in the quarter, connecting on nine to contribute to the lead.
It was smooth sailing for Shawnee State as they continued to control the tempo in the second quarter. Once in rhythm, the Bears made a series of highlight worthy play's including a Sydney King double move in the post that made it 32-10. The Bears would not trail during the entire first half while shooting a solid 40%. Shawnee led 41-18 going into halftime.
Cumberland enjoyed more offensive success in the first four minutes of the third quarter, outscoring SSU 7-6. The Bears continued to lead in convincing fashion though, leading 49-29 with 4:22 remaining. Shawnee would eclipse 60 points on a Shania Massie and-one that she converted from the line. The Bears would go out on a 10-0 to end the third quarter, with the game well in hand leading 65-36.
In a dominating fourth quarter, the Bears inched closer to their 21st win of the season, Bailey Cummins hit a three at around the six minute mark to put the Bears up by an even 30. The Bears would go on to win by a final score of 86-50, snapping their two game losing streak.
The win improves SSU to 21-7 on the season and 8-4 in conference competition. The Phoenix fall to 6-18 and 2-10 in the Mid-South.
Shawnee State Women's Basketball will travel to Campbellsville on Thursday, Feb. 21 to take on the third ranked tigers for their last conference road game. Tip-off from Campbellsville is set for 6PM.
