Portsmouth, Ohio – Shawnee State women's soccer played to a 1-1 draw with Ohio Christian on Saturday afternoon, in the Bears' home opener at Shawnee Turf.
Ohio Christian would open the scoring early in the first half. Rachel Lawell would receive a pass from Brooke Lezotte and finish past SSU goalkeeper Michaela Garner (SR/Heath, Ohio), putting the Trailblazers up 1-0. OCU would make that lead stand until halftime, absorbing some Shawnee State pressure to end the half.
The Bears would quickly equalize on the other side of halftime. Destiny Chester (JR/Canal Winchester, Ohio) would score her first of the season unassisted, finishing past Mandi Kempton to tie the game at 1-1. Ohio Christian would go on the attack for the rest of the half, pushing to re-take the lead. However, SSU would hold firm and send the match to overtime.
Ohio Christian would dominate the first overtime, getting three shots off and dominating possession. However, SSU would hold firm, with Garner making a key save to keep the score level. Both teams would take two shots in the second overtime, with both keepers up to the task on them. Time would expire after two overtimes with the teams level at 1-1.
The draw moves Shawnee State to 2-2-1 on the season. Ohio Christian moves to 3-1-1. The all-time series between the teams stands at 5-2-2 in Shawnee State's advantage.
Shawnee State women's soccer return to action on Wednesday, September 12 at Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio). Kickoff is set for 3:00pm.
