Portsmouth, Ohio – Shawnee State men's soccer got a game-winning goal from Caspar Nolte (SR/Germantown, Ohio) in the second overtime as the Bears defeated Rochester (Mich.) 1-0 at Shawnee Turf.
After a scoreless regulation, the two teams headed to overtime. Rochester nearly scored in the first overtime, with Marco Gomez' effort hitting off the underside of the crossbar and out to preserve the scoreless tie. SSU's breakthrough would come in the fourth minute of the second overtime. Cian Broens (FR/Maastricht, Netherlands) would hit in a lovely cross from the right side, avoiding the defense and finding the head of Caspar Nolte, who headed past Wyatt Chunn for SSU's game-winning goal.
The physical match would see Shawnee State out-shoot Rochester 19-16 on the evening. SSU also had 14 fouls to Rochester's six, as both teams would play tough defense to prevent scoring until the second overtime. Four yellow cards were issued in the match, a result of the high intensity of the game.
The win improves Shawnee State to 2-1-0, matching their win total from 2017 three games into the season. Rochester falls to 1-3.
Shawnee State men's soccer returns to action on Sunday night when they take on Siena Heights (Mich.) in their third straight match at Shawnee Turf. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm.
