Grayson, Ky. – Shawnee State softball saw their losing streak extend to four on Monday afternoon, falling to Kentucky Christian 3-1 in game one and 6-0 in game two.
Shawnee State would take an early lead in game one, pushing a run across in the second inning. Tara Duncan (SR/Lancaster, Ohio) would reach base on Kailey Rigdon's error, getting to second. Mackenzie Riley (SO/Proctorville, Ohio) would ground out to third, allowing Duncan to reach third base. Katie Wolsefer (FR/Franklin, Ohio) would get Duncan in one batter later with a sacrifice fly.
Kentucky Christian would hit back to take the lead, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Jade Spurlock would single to center field, followed by McKenzie Vanover's single to shortstop. With two on, Kailey Rigdoin would reach base on a dropped pop-up by Wolsefer, allowing Spurlock to score. Cassandra Adkins would then hit a two-run double to give Kentucky Christian the lead, which they would not relinquish.
Whitney McKay would shut down the Shawnee State offense, allowing only one run on nine hits in seven innings to get the win. Brooke Blevins (FR/Frankfort, Ohio) would pick up the loss, allowing three runs on six hits in six innings pitched.
The Shawnee State offense would not get going in game two as Whitney McKay would again stymie the Bears, throwing a complete game shutout. McKay would allow no runs on four hits in seven innings pitched, blanking the Bears.
Kentucky Christian would push their first run across in the bottom of the third. Hunter Scott would lead off the inning by reaching second on a wild throw by Ashtyn Saunders (FR/Lancaster, Ohio). Jordan Shockley would bunt her to third, and Scott would score on McKenzie Vanover's RBI single.
Two more KCU runs would cross in the bottom of the fourth. Bri Crooks would lead off the inning by singling to right field, but would be forced out on a grounder by Whitney McKay. McKay would score on a double by Samantha Mitchell, and Mitchell would score two batters later on Tara Duncan's misplayed grounder.
Kentucky Christian would put the game away in the bottom of the sixth with three more runs. Hunter Scott would again reach base on an error, this one a misplayed grounder by Haley Rawlins (FR/South Point, Ohio). After Jordan Shockley grounded into a fielder's choice, Jade Spurlock would double to center field to score her. McKenzie Vanover would single Spurlock to third, and both runners would score on Kailey Rigdon's triple.
McKay's excellent game two pitching performance would get her the win. McKenzie Whittaker (SO/McDermott, Ohio) would throw six innings, allowing six runs on seven hits to take the loss. Shawnee State would commit eight errors in the game.
With the losses, Shawnee State falls to 23-20 on the season. Kentucky Christian improves to 10-22.
Shawnee State finishes the regular season on Tuesday, April 25th when they travel to #19 Rio Grande. First pitch is set for 3:00pm.
