Women's Soccer stumbles in conference opener to Cumberlands

Portsmouth, Ohio – Shawnee State women's soccer kicked off Mid-South Conference play on Wednesday, falling to University of the Cumberlands 4-1 at Shawnee Turf.

The Patriots opened the scoring when Jody LeMaster fired a rebound past Michaela Garner (SO/Heath, Ohio) to give Cumberlands a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute. After a back and forth half, Shawnee State would equalize when Destiny Chester (FR/Canal Winchester) would score off a rebound herself in the 35th minute. The half would end 1-1.

Cumberlands would score early in the second half when Dakota Gadd would latch onto a through ball and score. The Patriots would add a third goal two minutes later through Asha Vilaythong. The lead secured, Cumberlands would finish the scoring when Rachel Palazzo finished a cross from Taylor Lawson.

With the loss, Shawnee State falls to 0-3-2, and opens Mid-South Conference play 0-1. Cumberlands improves to 7-3, and begins conference play 1-0.

The Bears will be back in action on Saturday, September 24th when they travel to Tennessee to take on Cumberland University in MSC action. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00pm.
