Bears split twinbill vs. Georgetown on Senior Day

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Baseball) – Shawnee State got another solid outing from Derek Moore (JR/Wheelersburg, Ohio), along with a two-RBI day from Christian Helton (FR/Lexington, Ky.) en route to a 4-0 win over Georgetown College in game one – but suffered a 10-inning defeat in game two – as the Bears earned a doubleheader split with the Tigers on Senior Day at Branch Rickey Park.

Prior to game two, seniors Brandon Bonar (SR/Chillicothe, Ohio), Austin Hall (SR/Wheelersburg, Ohio), Mitchell Lendenski (SR/Loveland, Ohio) and Conner Wilson (SR/San Diego, Calif.) were honored for their contributions to the Bears' program.

Shawnee State and Georgetown are set for the series rubber match on Sunday, beginning at noon at Branch Rickey Park.

Game One

Derek Moore was spectacular on the hill for the Bears, pitching a complete-game shutout while scattering 10 hits and striking out eight. The junior hurler earned his sixth victory of the season, as the Bears won the contest, 4-0.

The score was locked at zero for the first four frames before Shawnee State got on the board in the fifth. Lendenski singled with one out to open the rally and Andrew Vanthournout (SO/Bowling Green, Ky.) added a single to put runners on the corners. Nick Rose (FR/Olentangy, Ohio) followed with a double, plating Lendenski as the Bears went ahead, 1-0.

Moore would do the rest, surrendering just three hits over the final four frames, never allowing a runner to advance past second base.

SSU added three insurance runs in the eighth, as Wilson and Connor Kindred (FR/Elizabethtown, Ky.) laced back-to-back singles to open the inning. A throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt loaded the bases before Helton delivered a two-RBI double to break the game open. Lendenski added an RBI single later in the game to bring the score to its final.

Game Two

The pitching again was tremendous for the Bears as Clay Tefft (SO/Wauseon, Ohio) provided 5.2 innings of work, surrendering just one run on three hits with no walks. Mike Watson (SO/Niles, Ohio) provided 2.2 innings in relief, allowing no runs on three hits, two strikeouts and a walk.

Shawnee State's lone run came in the first inning, when Kindred singled between third and short with two outs and the bases loaded to plate Vanthournout, giving the Bears a 1-0 advantage.

The bats then went quiet until the sixth inning on both sides, until Georgetown used a two-out RBI single from Sam Medina to bring the contest even, setting up for three extra innings of the scheduled seven-inning game.

The next three frames were again scoreless before the Tigers got a leadoff double in the 10th from Chaz Meadows, followed by an RBI single from Trey Gross. The Bears were unable to take advantage of a GC error in the bottom of the 10th, falling, 2-1.
