Big fourth quarter boosts Women's Basketball past Rio Grande

Portsmouth, Ohio – Shawnee State women's basketball used a huge fourth quarter to defeat rivals Rio Grande 97-83 on Saturday afternoon.

The first three quarters were back and forth and would see Shawnee State trailing after three quarters, 64-61. SSU led 23-20 after one quarter, but would lose the lead by halftime, and found themselves down by as many as seven in the third quarter.

However, Shawnee State would come alive in the fourth to outscore Rio Grande 36-19 en route to the victory. Shawnee would shoot 5-11 from three in the second half, and overall the Bears shot 51% from the field in the second half to race past the Red Storm.

Jonessa Moore (SR/Cincinnati, Ohio) would lead the way for Shawnee State, scoring 17 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. Brandie Snow (FR/Hartville, Ohio) led Shawnee State in scoring with 21 points, with Bailey Cummins (FR/Brooksville, Kentucky) adding 20 points and seven rebounds. Madison Ridout (JR/Jackson, Ohio) added 17 points as well.

Rio Grande's Sharday Baines led all scorers with 25 points, and Jaida Carter added 22 for the Red Storm.

Due to their contributions, Jonessa Moore and Jaida Carter were named Dick Hyland Players of the Game for their excellence on the floor.

With the win, Shawnee State improves to 4-0 on the season. Rio Grande falls to 1-1.

Shawnee State are next in action on Tuesday, November 8th when they take on Indiana University-East. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00pm.
