CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. (Women's Basketball) – The Shawnee State women's basketball team turned the ball over 23 times – including 18 in the first half – and were unable to overcome a 16-point first half deficit, as No. 4 Campbellsville University coasted to a 77-45 victory over the Bears on Thursday night at the Powell Athletic Center.
Tabby McKinney (SR/Canton, Ohio) led SSU with a double-double, collecting 10 points and 10 boards, but was the lone SSU player in double-figures. Reigning Mid-South Conference Player of the Week was limited to just seven points, while Shavon Robinson (SR/Canton, Ohio) added eight.
For the Lady Tigers, four players landed in double-figures in a collective team effort, as Caroline Owen led the charge with 14. Lindsey Burd added 13, LeeAnn Grider scored 12 and Daizah Kimberland tacked on 10. CU shot 46.2 percent from the field, limiting SSU to just 34.6 percent.
The Bears led for just less than three minutes in the contest, all coming at the opening of the game. Zieverink hit a pair of buckets to give the visitors, 2-0 and 4-2, advantages. The Lady Tigers followed with a 12-4 run to surge ahead 16-8 at the 14-minute mark.
Campbellsville continued to up the advantage, leading by as many as 16 when Chelsea Craig connected for two with 2:26 remaining in the half, and the a bucket from the Lady Tigers with 19 seconds left sent the home team into the locker room ahead, 37-24.
It was all Campbellsville in the second half, as well, as CU never allowed the lead to shrink below nine. By the midway point in the second half, the Lady Tigers had extended the lead to 24, at 60-36. From then on, the advantage never got below 20.
When the final gun sounded, Campbellsville had extended to its largest lead of the game – 32 points to bring the final score to 77-45.
SSU was just 4-of-19 from three-point land in the contest, while Campbellsville hit 8-of-17 from deep. The Bears had just six assists to go against the 23 turnovers, but were able to collect 13 steals, including seven from Robinson.
Shawnee State brings the regular season to a close on Saturday, facing off against St. Catharine College on the road. A win will secure the third seed in the Mid-South Conference Tournament, set to begin on March 5. Tip-off versus SCC is slated for 2 p.m.
