PORTSMOUTH – Tennis wrapped up its regular season with a pair of defeats to Cumberland University and Georgetown College Monday afternoon at the Dr. William E. Daehler Tennis Center. Both of those squads are receiving votes in the latest NAIA Poll. The Bears fell 5-4 against Cumberland to start the day before a 7-0 loss to Georgetown.
In the opening match against the Bulldogs, Shawnee State received walkover wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 5 and No. 6 singles as Cumberland only fielded four players for the match. Things got even more precarious for the receiving votes Bulldogs when their No. 4 player was forced to retire before the start of her singles match after an illness.
Needing just one win among all the remaining matches to pull the upset, the Bulldogs showed their strength at the top of the lineup as they did not allow more than one game at any of the singles position, while the closest doubles match was 8-2.
Against Georgetown, the Bears started out in singles and fell in all six of those matches. The Bears were able to get games at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 but could not come any closer. The lone doubles match to finish came at No. 3 where the Tigers were an 8-0 winner.
Tennis will now await its opening round opponent for the Mid-South Conference Tournament. The Bears finished the year with an overall record of 2-6 in the conference. Those two victories are tied with Bluefield and Pikeville for the sixth-most in the conference.
The MSC Tournament will get underway Thursday at 9 a.m. on Georgetown College's campus.
