PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Women's Soccer) -- Maddie Woodard (FR/Camden, Ohio) found the back of the net in the 34th minute, and keeper Mollie King (JR/West Jefferson, Ohio) pitched a shutout for the Bears, as the Shawnee State women's soccer team won, 1-0, over Georgetown College in the opening round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon at Shawnee Turf.
The victory sends Shawnee State on to the semifinal round, where the squad will face off against the winner of top-seeded Lindsey Wilson College and the University of the Cumberlands.
Woodard's score came at the 34:45 mark in the first half, handing the Bears a 1-0 advantage. Woodard connected, unassisted, from 25 yards out. From the right side, she sent a shot to the opposite side, finding the back of the net in the upper-90.
Though the Tigers were able to record 10 shots – including four on frame – SSU held the visitors to just one shot on goal during the entire second half, which ended in a save from King. She made four saves in the contest.
Georgetown was awarded a corner kick in the final minute of the contest, adding a chance for a last-ditch effort, but was unable to convert, as the Bears earned their first-ever victory in the MSC Tournament.
The squad now travels to Campbellsville University – the host site of the final two rounds – for the semifinals against Lindsey Wilson or the Cumberlands. The semifinal rounds are slated for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13. The championship round will be played Friday at 5 p.m.
