PORTSMOUTH, OHIO (Women's Soccer) – Jenny Campbell (FR/Chillicothe, Ohio) slipped through the defense with 19 seconds to play and beat the keeper with a shot to the back post to break a 1-1 draw, as Shawnee State completed the unlikeliest of victories, defeating Georgetown College, 2-1, on Thursday afternoon at Shawnee Turf.
Georgetown was on the offensive for nearly the entirety of the opening half, recording eight shots, though only one found the target. Mollie King (JR/West Jefferson, Ohio) made the save to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard.
On the contrary, Shawnee State had virtually no opportunities, but took advantage when one came to fruition. In the 23rd minute, Schuyler Jones (JR/Ramnicu Valcea, Romania) possessed the ball just outside of the goalie box. Jones chipped over a defender to the feet of Maddie Woodard (FR/Camden, Ohio).
Woodard had a go from 22 yards away and finished hard in the top left corner for the goal, giving the Bears a 1-0 advantage headed into the locker room.
The Tigers again came out on the offensive in the second frame, recording four shots – just one on target – in the first five minute. The aggression finally paid off in the 74th minute. GC collected 10 shots over 30 minutes, as Lindsey Dunn found the back of the net.
Bea Cameron created the score, coming into open field down the left side. Cameron shot on target and King made a strong save leaning to the near post. The opportunity created a corner kick, which Cameron also took. The senior found Dunn on the back post, as she played the ball off her knee from point blank range.
The score seeming set the two squads up for an overtime situation before the late-game heroics from the freshman Campbell. Her goal marked her seventh of the season and second game winner.
King earned her third victory between the pipes, moving to 3-0 on the season.
Shawnee State will return to action Sunday for a non-conference bout with Ursuline College. The Bears return home on Oct. 8 versus the University of Rio Grande.
