PORTSMOUTH, OHIO (Women's Soccer) – Jenny Campbell (FR/Chillicothe, Ohio) scored in the ninth minute on an assist from keeper Mollie King (JR/West Jefferson, Ohio), but the goal was not enough, as the University of Rio Grande scored a late goal to overtake the Shawnee State women's soccer team, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Shawnee Turf.
The RedStorm (7-3-0) scored just three and a half minutes into the contest when Kasey Crow lifted a clever floater over the head of King. The shot clipped the crossbar and headed into the net, putting Shawnee State (5-6-0) on the board.
King got her revenge five minutes later. The keeper sent a long ball to the opposite end of the field on a punt which fell at Campbell's feet. The freshman slid between a pair of defenders to play the ball and beat the Rio goalie, Allison Keeney, finishing to the back post.
Rio Grande controlled much of the possession over the rest of the half, recording 13 shots, including three on frame. The Bears were able to put together just three attempts and one on goal.
Neither team created great chances in the second half, until Rio finally broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute. The score began innocuously enough, as Taylor Ahrens received a pass from Emma Rosenbaum just outside of the goalie box. Ahrens sent a floater toward the goal that seemed harmless.
The shot, however, caught King just a little too far away from the goal and clipped off her hands and into the net. The score seemed to stun the Bears, who would never recover.
SSU recorded just six shots in the game, compared to 21 from the RedStorm. King made five saves in the contest, but fell to 3-2 on the season in goal.
The Bears remain in non-conference action over the weekend, taking on Ohio Christian University on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Shawnee Turf. The match will represent the annual Kick for Krohn's game, as the team will wear orange warm-ups in support of Krohn's Disease.
