PORTSMOUTH – Tennis got back in the win column Monday afternoon with a 7-2 MSC victory over Bluefield College. With the victory, the Bears (2-1, 2-1 MSC) already have more Mid-South victories than they had in either of their first two years in the conference. It also makes the Bears a perfect 2-0 on their home courts in the early portion of the spring season.

With Bluefield traveling just five players to the match, the Bears already knew they had two points before play even started and needed just three more wins between doubles and singles. SSU's top two doubles teams would put them on the brink of victory with a pair of 8-5 victories. At No. 1 doubles, it was Ashley Fischer and Ashley O'Neill that came away with the 8-5 decision while Megan Dunham and Kayla Wiley were also 8-5 victors at No. 2 doubles. Abbi Morrow and Aubrey Johnson were the benefactors of the walkover victory at No. 3.

After sitting out the doubles portion of play, Kyra Keeton would seal the team victory just shortly after doubles wrapped up with consecutive 6-3 wins in both of her sets. This allowed the Bears to capture the team victory in the minimum five matches and the two sides played eight-point pro sets for the remainder of the afternoon.

The Bears suffered their first setback of the afternoon when they lost a tough 9-7 match at No. 2 singles. However, Fischer would get SSU back on track with a convincing 8-2 victory at No. 3. Shelbie Wulfekamp would concede just one game in her match at No. 4 to give the Bears their seventh team point of the day before SSU dropped the final match to finish at No. 5 singles. At No. 6, Morrow once again received the walkover victory.
