Shawnee State(23-9, 14-6) knocked off the Bears from the University of Pikeville (15-29, 3-17) twice in a Mid-South Conference showdown. With the sweep it marked the fourth win against Pikeville in as many tries as the Bears got timely hitting and strong pitching.
In the first game with the scored tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh Shawnee State's Kelsey Jenkins (Wheelersburg, OH), who went 2-for-3 with an RBI, hit a walk-off triple off the right field wall to take the first game 2-1 against the Bears of Pikeville.
Jenkins broke a 1-1game that was the same score since the top of the second. Pikeville tied the game with a run in the top of the second off starting pitcher Ali Thompson (Franklin Furnace, OH).
Thompson (11-5) who threw 7.0 innings allowing one unearned run and only three hits with seven strikeouts shut the Bears after getting out of a bases load jam in the first inning.
Thompson did not allowing another hit after the second inning for her 11th victory of the season.
Shawnee State scored their only other run in the bottom of the first inning as Jourdan Priddy (Xenia, OH) reached on an error and stole second. Kirsti Yates (Chillicothe, OH), who went 1-for-3 and an RBI, singled to center field, scoring Priddy.
The Bears jumped on Pikeville again in the first inning of the second game. Ericka Leighty (South Point, OH) tripled as Priddy scored from first. The hit gave Shawnee State an early 1-0 lead.
The Bears had their biggest inning of the day in the bottom of the fifth as they scored four runs on five hits. The inning was highlighted by a RBI double from freshman Katy Bender (Pickerington, OH) another RBI double from Hannah Foster (Portsmouth, OH) and a RBI single from Yates.
The inning would give starting pitcher Allie Chapman (Chesapeake, OH) more than enough as she shutdown Pikeville. Chapman did not allow another hit after a single in the top of the second inning.
Chapman (5-1) threw 7.0 innings allowing zero runs on one hit while striking out seven batters. With the win, Chapman won her fifth consecutive decision for Shawnee State.
Shawnee State will be back in action Friday as they travel to Urbana, OH to take on Urbana University. The Bears will close out the regular season on Saturday in their final home stand as they take on University of Virginia at Wise in a MSC clash.
