The Shawnee State baseball team fell in their first match-up against Southern Wesleyan 9-8 in a game that had a combined 26 hits and 17 runs.
The Bears scored jumped on the Warriors with a run in the top of the first inning before Southern Wesleyan would answer with a five run inning in the bottom frame to jump out to a 5-1 lead. It was a lead that the Bears could never overcome trailing the entire game.
Cody Spires started on the hill for Shawnee State pitching 5 and 1/3 innings allowing seven runs on 12 hits with three strikeouts.
The Bears scored at least one run in the first four innings as they clawed back from a 5-1 deficit to get within 6-5 after the fourth inning Southern Wesleyan was too much as they scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and another run in the seventh pushing their lead to 9-5.
Shawnee State made things interesting in the last two innings scoring three combined runs but fell short 9-8.
Some of the top performers for the Bears were Colin Keim (Clinton, OH), who went 2-for-4 with two RBI's. Cody Morrison (Spring, TX) also went 2-for-4 with a double. Adam Wamsley (Wheelersburg, OH) went 1-for-5 on the day with a homerun and two RBI's.
