Bears comeback downs Campbellsville

The Shawnee State Baseball Team (10-13, 1-3 MSC) picked up their first conference win as they downed the Tigers of Campbellsville University (14-4, 2-2 MSC) 7-4 on Friday afternoon. Senior Austin Dunfee (Pomeroy, OH) had a solid game on the mound to improve to 3-3 on the season. Dunfee pitched a complete game allowing four runs (three earned) on 10 hits, one walk while striking out four.

The Tigers got on the board in the third, posting three runs. Michael Dunham led off the inning with a double to right center and scored on a base hit by Tanner Nielsen. Danny Lapchak reached on a Bear error and Nielsen stole third to put runners on the corners. A single by Gibby Briones scored Nielsen and Lapchak scored on an RBI single by Craig Edwards to give Campbellsville the 3-0 advantage.

Junior Adam Wamsley (Wheelersburg, OH) got the Bears started in the fifth with a double to right center. Advancing to third on a ground out by freshman Cody Spires (Lancaster, OH), Wamsley was able to cross the plate on an RBI single by senior AJ Gomez (Spring, TX). The Bears then pulled within a run, as Gomez scored on a base hit by senior Ryan Burnett (Bellevue, WA).

Campbellsville added a run in the top of the sixth as Chance Kopacz scored on a single by Rylan Chin.

Shawnee State rallied in the bottom of the inning. Senior Justin Marrero led the inning off with a single through the middle and senior Danny Gesick (Pickerington, OH) single to left field. Junior Colin Keim (Clinton, OH) loaded the bases with a base hit. Senior Cody Morrison was hit by a pitch, scoring Marrero. An error by Campbellsville scored another Bear run and pinch runner junior Aaron Suydam (Painesville, OH) gave the Bears the 5-4 as he scored on an RBI by Spires.

In the top of the eighth with the tying run on third, shortstop Adam Wamsley made a spectacular play for the Bears to end, keeping their lead.

The Bears added to their lead in the eighth. With bases loaded, Everman hit a single through the middle scoring two runs and giving Shawnee the 7-4 lead.

Dunfee secured the win for the Bears in the top of the ninth. With two runners on and one out, Dunfee secured the win with back-to-back fly outs to hand the Bears their first conference win of the season.

Ryan Richardson was tagged with his first loss of the season on the mound. In 5.0 innings, he allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts to fall to 3-1 on the season.

At the plate, Wamsley finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Everman also went 2-for-4 in the game with two RBI's.

Shawnee State will complete the three-game series against Campbellsville tomorrow with first pitch set for noon.
