Bears pounce Hilltoppers 38-1

The Shawnee State Baseball Team (17-19) pounced Ohio University-Chillicothe (1-9) 38-1 in a non-conference game on Wednesday afternoon. Shawnee State accumulated 30 hits in the game, including five hits apiece from freshman Matt Jones (Greenup, KY) and Cody Spires (Lancaster, OH).

The Bears scored in every inning including 19 runs in the fifth inning to mercy-rule the Hilltoppers in seven innings. Shawnee State accumulated 36 RBI's on their 38 runs.

The Hilltoppers' only score came on a homerun by Collin Urhig in the fifth.

Shawnee State used four pitchers on the mound. Senior Austin Dunfee (Pomeroy, OH) was tagged with the win.

Spires finished the game 5-for-6 at the plate with four runs scored, two doubles, a triple and seven RBI's. Jones finished 5-for-7 in the game with four runs scored on three homeruns (two in the fifth), a double and eight RBI's. Seniors Quentin Everman (Galloway, OH), Cody Morrison (Spring, TX), AJ Gomez (Spring, TX) and junior Aaron Suydam (Painesville, OH) each had three hits in the game. Morrison had a homerun, while Gomez added two doubles in the win.

Shawnee State resumes conference play as they travel to the University of Pikeville on Friday and Saturday. Friday's game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
