LEBANON, Tenn. – A Cumberland goal in the 81st minute of play was the difference Saturday in men's soccer's 1-0 defeat on the road. Despite the hosts holding a 9-3 edge in shots on goal over the 90 minute game, seven saves by Thomas Carbonari kept the game knotted until there was less than 10 minutes remaining on the clock.
Carbonari was replaced in goal after playing the first 76:20 in net. Jordan Cross would save one of the two shots that he faced Saturday, but the one goal that came with just 9:45 to play was the difference.
Overall, the Bears took eight shots compared to Cumberland University's 23. For the Bears, four different players – all in the starting eleven – ended up recording shots. Luke Purpero led the team with three shots, but was unable to put any of those attempts on frame.
Chad Johnston and Joseph Webster each put two shots on net. Webster's two attempts were both off target, while Johnston put both of his attempts on frame. He forced the opposing keeper to make stops in the sixth and 25th minutes of play.
Jacob Hackworth took the Bears only other shot of the game that was on target. His shot came during the 79th minute of play - just about a minute and a half before Cumberland scored what turned out to be the only goal of the afternoon.
The Bears finished the regular season with a 3-6 mark in Mid-South contests. Those three wins tied the team for seventh in the conference standings. However, the loss on the road to St. Catharine was the tiebreak between the two schools and the Bears will enter the Mid-South playoffs as the No. 8 seed.
In the quarterfinals, SSU will square off against regular season MSC Champion and overall national No. 1 Rio Grande. When the two schools met on the Shawnee Turf earlier this season, Rio Grande escaped with a game-winning goal that came in double overtime with just 21 seconds to play. The rematch will take place on Saturday, Oct. 3 at a time to be determined.
