RIO GRANDE, Ohio – Eighth-seeded men's soccer saw its season come to an end with a 5-0 loss at the hands of MSC Regular Season Champion and NAIA No. 2 Rio Grande Saturday evening in the conference quarterfinals.
The Bears conclude their season with a 4-14 record. Three of those wins came in conference play.
Rio Grande took the early lead in the 14th minute of play off a corner where Luiz Filho was waiting for the header and he would knock it home for the quick 1-0 lead. Despite being outshot 11-4 in the opening half, the Bears would not concede another goal in the opening 45 minutes as six saves by Thomas Carbonari, who also had several goal-saving punches on multiple corner attempts, kept the game at a one-goal deficit.
In total, the Red Storm took 10 corner kicks in the contest. Their second goal, which came just five minutes into the second half, would also come on this scenario with an own goal. Shortly after the second goal was scored, Carbonari again came up with a huge stop, but this time he was injured on the play. He would attempt to stay in the game, but would eventually be removed with just over 28 minutes remaining in the match.
Richard Isberner would score during the 66th minute of play, while Filho would also tally his second of the contest just over three minutes later off an assist from Isberner. The Red Storm would then tally their final goal of the match in the final four minutes of play to end up with the 5-0 win.
Rio Grande held a 27-7 advantage in total shots and 17-1 edge in shots on goal. Jack Marchant was called on to make just one save for Rio Grande as he recorded the shutout. Carbonari finished with seven saves in his 61-plus minutes of playing time. His replacement, Jordan Cross, would stop five of the eight shots that he faced during his time in net.
Luke Purpero and Dylan Stevens each finished the game with two shots, while Purpero was the lone Bears' player to put his attempt on net. Jacob Hackworth, Nick Dowdell and Dylan Whitehead also recorded shots in the season finale.
