Shawnee scores four second half goals to defeat rival Rio Grande

The Shawnee State Women's Soccer Team scored four second half goals to shutout rival Rio Grande on Wednesday afternoon. The Bears improve to 9-5 overall and 2-3 in the Mid-South Conference. Rio Grande falls to 4-9 on the season and 1-5 in the MSC.

In a rain soaked game, neither team was able to find the back of the net as both teams tallied two shots on goal in the first half.

The Bears got rolling early in the second half as sophomore Teresa Welch scored her first goal of the season off of a rebound in the 47th minute. In the 69th minute, freshman Allison Nagle found senior Kat Westendorf for her fifth goal of the season. Junior Brittany Brooks got into action as she tallied her conference leading 11th goal of the season in the 79th minute on an assist by senior Emmy Kennedy. Brooks then teamed up Welch in the 83rd minute, as Welch scored her second goal of the game.

SSU's freshman Emily Kuehn recorded five saves in the shutout.

Shawnee State travels to St. Catharine on Saturday for a conference doubleheader. The women's game is set to start at 2:00 p.m.
