An outstanding team effort by the Shawnee State Women's Soccer Team helped propel them to victory over the Kentucky Christian Knights, 7-0, Saturday afternoon. With the win, Shawnee moves on to 7-3 for the season, while Kentucky Christian falls to 6-4-1.
The Bears started off the day promising, by getting on the board early in the match. A goal by freshman Allison Nagle in the sixth minute of the game, set the tone for Shawnee. Her goal was assisted by junior Brittney Brooks and senior Kat Westendorf. A little later in the 17th minute of the match, junior defender Alisha Fournier was able to find the back of the net with the help of Nagle and Westendorf. Just two minutes later Nagle defeated Kentucky Christian's goal keeper in a one-on-one challenge on a thru ball from Fournier to score the third goal for the Bears. Brooks found some success of her own after a corner kick from freshman Katy Castillo in the 29th minute. Freshman Molly King finished out the first half with Shawnee's only unassisted goal of the day, scoring after a deflected shot off the post from herself, send the Bears into halftime with a 4-0 lead over the Knights.
Westendorf started the second half attack after finishing a shot played by both Nagle and Brooks deep inside the six yard box. Freshman forward Becky Legge later scored the seventh and final goal for the Bears in the 80th minute of play after receiving a pass from Castillo, also from inside the six yard line.
Shawnee State will return to the turf on Tuesday, October 4th for a conference double-header with Pikeville. The kick-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
