Behind a career-low 69 that allowed Austin Barta to share Co-Medalist honors at the Harry Weinbrecht Invitational in Portsmouth Friday evening, the sophomore from Marietta was named as the Mid-South Conference's Golfer of the Week for the first time in his career Monday, according to MSC officials.
In addition to matching fellow teammate BJ Knox with his career-low round, Barta also shot a nine-hole record for Shawnee State by carding a five-under 31 on the back nine holes to finish play. He posted birdies on five of his final eight holes of competition (the 11th, 12th, 14th, 15th, and 17th) to finish with that five-under 31. The Marietta native posted pars on 10 additional holes en route to finishing with his three-under for the 18-hole event.
The honor is not only the first in Barta's career, but also marks the sixth time this season that Shawnee State has won a Mid-South Conference Golfer of the Week Award in men's golf. Knox has already won MSC Golfer of the Week honors three times this season himself while Elijah McCarty has earned the same honor twice.
