Joe McCauley

Joe McCauley was named head coach of the Shawnee State women's soccer program in 2024.

McCauley's team posted a 3-9-4 record in 2024. The Bears began the season 0-6-1 before finishing 3-3-3 over its final nine regular-season matches. Four players earned All-River States Conference honors: Lucie Ashkettle, Madison Culp, Claire Favre and Isabelle Riddle. Ten players were named River States Conference Scholor Athletes: Alex Hurn, Annie Coriell, Claire Favre, Elizabeth Brown, Lucie Ashkettle, Julye Derenemesnil, Ariane Davis, Madison Culp, Robyn Drinkwater, Carlota Ipina Taylor. Ashkettle, Brown, Coriell, Culp, Favre and Hurn earned CSC Academic All-District honors.

During McCauley's second season, Shawnee State finished 4-13-1 in 18 matches. Isabelle Riddle was named to the All-River States Conference Second Team, while Madison Culp and Lucie Ashkettle were named to the Third Team. Nine players earned NAIA Scholar-Athlete status: Whitney Dean, Olivia Blankenship, Elizabeth Brown, Lucie Ashkettle, Annie Coriell, Robyn Drinkwater, Madison Culp, Isabelle Riddle and Brooklyn Hawes. Ashkettle, Brown, Riddle, Coriell, Culp and Drinkwater were also named to the CSC Academic All-District list.

McCauley received a three-year contract extension in May 2026.

PRIOR TO SHAWNEE STATE

McCauley, who began playing soccer in the sixth grade, ultimately rose to become a star at Louisville DeSales High School, helping the Colts obtain a Kentucky High School State Athletic Association State Runner-Up finish in 1983 as part of a high school career that saw McCauley stay home after obtaining an opportunity to play at the University of Louisville.
 
Playing under Claudio Maldonado, who served as Louisville's first men's soccer head coach from the inception of the program in 1979 to 1992, McCauley became the starting goalkeeper as an upperclassman and enjoyed strong seasons in both 1987 and 1988. Between the two campaigns, McCauley saved 189 shots, posted a goals-against-average of 2.06 as a junior followed by a 1.60 GAA mark as a senior, and helped the Cardinals improve from 4-15-3 after his sophomore season to a 10-10 overall record as a senior.
 
For his career at Louisville, McCauley sits fifth all-time in Louisville history in single-season saves and career saves and is 10th in program history in career shutouts, with nine.
 
While finishing his bachelor's degree up at Louisville, which he obtained in December 1990, McCauley served as a student assistant underneath Maldonado.
 
In 1993, McCauley got his first opportunity as a women's soccer head coach at Bellarmine University, who was competing in the NCAA Division II. McCauley led Bellarmine to a 10-7 overall record in 1995 and guided the Knights to their first Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Tournament appearance in 1996.
 
In 1998, McCauley moved to the NCAA Division I ranks, accepting an assistant coaching position at Northern Illinois. He helped guide the program to the 1998 Mid-American Conference championship with a 14-7 overall record and a 9-1 mark in conference play. He also coached two Academic All-Americans, Anne Mucci and Megan Anderson.
 
McCauley returned to the NCAA Division II ranks in 2003, accepting the head coaching position at Eckerd (Fla.) College, where he spent the next seven seasons. During his tenure, he coached two All-Sunshine State Conference selections: second-team honoree Johanna Wiborg and honorable mention selection Amy Lambert. Wiborg also earned NSCAA All-South Region honors.
 
McCauley returned to the Midwest in 2010, accepting the head coaching position at Missouri University of Science and Technology and rejoining the Great Lakes Valley Conference. During his 12 seasons with the Miners, he led the program to the three highest single-season conference win totals in school history (2010, 2014 and 2021), the program's first-ever Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament appearance in 2010, a GLVC Tournament championship match appearance in 2014, a GLVC Tournament semifinal appearance in 2021 and a school-record 11 shutouts during the 2021 season.
 
McCauley joined Bellarmine as an assistant men's soccer coach in 2022. During his two seasons in Louisville, Bellarmine compiled a 12-9-14 record while competing in the Atlantic Sun Conference. McCauley helped guide the Knights to their first ASUN Tournament semifinal appearance in 2022, a second-place finish in the conference regular-season standings in 2023 and the program's first ASUN Tournament championship match appearance in 2023 after defeating Stetson (Fla.), 3-2, in the semifinals before falling to Lipscomb (Tenn.), 1-0, in the championship match.
 
McCauley earned a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) 'B' License in June 1996, followed by a USSF 'A' License the following June and a USSF Refreshed 'A' License in June 2009. McCauley has been a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America since 1994.
