BUCKHANNON, W. Va. -- Shawnee State (1-2-1, 1-0) won the school's first Mountain East Conference match in any sport with a 3-1 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan at Cebe Ross Field on Sunday.
The Bobcats struck first with a goal from Jackson Dalton in the 24' to take a 1-0 lead.
Shawnee State quickly responded, however, as
Théo Cavaleiro Trindade scored his second goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 26' to tie the match at 1-1.
Floyd Watts made back-to-back saves in the 27' and 28' before
Rickai Malianga-Torrence put a shot on goal in the 42nd minute, but his attempt was unsuccessful.
Shawnee State and West Virginia Wesleyan reached halftime tied 1-1.
Watts recorded his fourth save of the match in the 49' to keep the game tied.
Murilo Teixeira Cardozo broke the tie in the 58' with his first goal of the season to give the Bears a 2-1 lead.
Samuel Richter scored a goal in the 71' to extend Shawnee State's lead to 3-1.
Watts made one final save in the 88' to post a second-half shutout and help the Bears secure their first NCAA Division II and MEC win, 3-1, over West Virginia Wesleyan.
Bears by the Numbers
Théo Cavaleiro Trindade scored his second goal of the season and currently leads the Bears with five points through four matches. The junior also ranks third in the MEC in points.
Murilo Cardozo and
Samuel Richter both scored their first goals of the season. Cardozo paced the team with two shots on goal.
Floyd Watts played the entire match in goal for Shawnee State, allowing one goal and making five saves. The junior leads the Mountain East Conference with 17 saves on the season.
